   Hey Guys,

   I finally found that perfect pair of shrink to fit 501s that I've been searching the stores for.

   It's STF and it has a sorta black rinse effect. They're called black STFs. But, at first glance, they appear to be regular STFs, only a bit darker.

   I'm sure happy with the fit, and I'm never gonna wash 'em. They fit a bit loose now, cos they're raw and unwashed. Enough for a guy to tuck his shirt tail in if he wishes. The tags say "Shrink ti Fit", but the two horse patch says "501", made in Mexico. Retail cost $34.99.

   Had to try on several pairs before I found that true pair of STF 501s. The first ones had that "State Trooper" look.- snug waist, bulge in the thighs and snug legs. I rejected 'em, can't stand 501s like that.

   Ned, I just want to mention that these "black" STF 501s are more of a city boy's 501s than the trad blue STF 501s which are more of a farm boy's work jeans. I'm thinking about this in regard to how to dress for a casual Friday at the office. Think you're safer with these blackish jeans. You might give em a try.

   I stress that these ain't "Black Levis". I'd call em STFs with a sorta blackish rinse. The color just seems a bit deeper and darker than your usual STF 501 blues. Check em out. I note that the "Verde" 501s have goldish buttons while the black 501s retain silver buttons and have silverish rivets. I prefer the silver.

   These sound interesting, Tim. If you still have the tags, would you mind telling me what the color code is? Regular STFs are 37460, I believe.

   Daniel, STFs are usually 501-0000. I have seen some that have the 0117 code, too.

   Dan, The color code for these "black" shrink to fit 501 rigids is 37465. They should be available at the same retail store where you bought your 501 blues. You can see pics of em on the net at Langstons, for example. But they look so similar to the indigo blues on line, you really need to see em in person and side by side to the indigos.

   Interestingly, Langstons says that if you want to keep your STFs rigid, buy your actual size. Otherwise, adjust for shrinkage. Apparently, many dudes don't wash and shrink their 501s, but keep em stiff. Take your pick.

   What you're describing sounds like the rinse on a pair of 512's I have. It's sort of like an indigo overdyed with black. Hard to describe. Not dark indigo, but not really black either.

   i was looking at the different colors of 501xx stf's online at levis.com and i was tempted to get the black ones but i discarded the idea in a heart beat when i notice that i DIDN'T see xx on the tag and there is some funky logo on the inside of the waist in the back. i think the color that Tim is referring to is called night it matches the description and again i would like to mention its not a 501XX pair but 501, same for black as far as i can tell.
   question for Tim, what color is the stitching on your pair, does it have the XX on the tag and does it have that funky logo in the inside of the waist in the back?

   Black STF's are 501-0226. Black is the lightest 501XX jeans made weighing in at a modest 11.5 oz. denim. Shame on the levi strauss company. I guess because of the wash, the black 501XX is not as dark as the 501 preshrunk and all the others. Even the USA made 501 black preshunk's were more of a dark charcoal than black.
