i was just wondering if any of you had a preference on which tab you prefer. i myself like the blank (r) red tab because it is something that is more uncommon and makes my jeans more unique. i just got 2 pairs of 501xx stf's in the mail today and i was so happy that the indigo pair i got was a (r) tab because i normally spend so much time hunting them down in stores. so that's what motivated this post, i would really like to hear what you guys think.

Welcome to the forums!
That's interesting, it's not something i'd thought of before. I know people get into having the xx printed on the tag. I believe there's some info about it at levi's guide. certainly there is about big E vs small e: http://www.levisguide.com/bige/bige.html

well the reason that i was wondering peoples preference when it came to the (r) and the Levis red tab is that 2 pairs of Levis made in the same exact style on the same day and in the same factory can have either red tab. Besides color and country of production its the only thing that can be different between 2 pairs that are the exact same style. this tab difference is also unlike the big E red tabs that denote the year or collection and are the same in every pair. i myself like to make sure i have at least a few pairs around that have the (R) red tag (im wearing light blue stf's with one right now) because it make them more unique (i have heard anywhere between 1 in 10 to 1 in a 100 are made like that). it would be great if anyone can tell me the cause of the (R) tab. so far the best answer i found was that when the machine that stitches the tabs runs out of thread they have to put through one that comes out blank and they still use the blanks because they only need to have the (R) on the tag and not the word Levis because its the red tag itself that is a registered trademark

ok i went to my local Levis store today and asked the (really attractive might i add) sales woman about the red tab an she informed me it 1 in 8 that's an (R) tab. she was also going to give me a packet of info of great facts and such on levis but couldn't find it
im going to make a thread about what i saw in the store but i did want to put it out there that the (R) tab is 1 in 8

that's really interesting, i would have loved to hear what was in the info packet!
I wonder why they do 1 in 8?

Personally, I dislike making a purchase ending up with the 'R' red tab. The red tab has been refered to as the 'device'. From what I understand, the red tab is done both ways to fully copyright the 'device'.

On the Herman & Katnip cartoons, should should what Katnip usually says, "That's logical"

I recall reading somewhere (Levi's website, maybe) -- and this may be obsolete now -- that trademark law was that a registered trademark could not consist of words or letters. So, in order to maintain the registered trademark of the red tab, they had to make a certain number of jeans with just the red tab and (R) symbol.
I remember getting my first pair of 501's with the (R) tab and wondering if they were counterfeits! Since then, I've always preferred having the name on the tab.
