I have an idea for an upcoming article about mistakes that I have made with 501's. I have some common ones that will be helpful I think for people to hopefully learning from but also some funny ones. For example, I have this "really cool" fade mark on the 5th pocket of one pair from a USB thumb drive that I always keep there. lol not the coolest fade mark to have but now i know to keep something cool in that pocket on future pairs. Any other stories out there?

Lets consider the fade mark from the USB thumb drive the 21st century version of the fade marks on the back pocket(s) from a wallet or a cigarette pack.

fade marks: around the working guys here, the SKOAL box (4" round circle) is the symbol of choice. The tobaco chewers marking their choice on their butt.

interesting Bill. the kids i used to hang out with always wore through their pockets cause they wore wallets with snaps. so they would have two small holes in the back pocket.

Bleaching STF 501s was a matter of trial and error. Many a nice new pair of STFs would hit the trash prematurely cos of a failed experiment.
I'm talking of high school guys, a few years back. They wanted to fade their 501s from the start, or make some interesting designs on em using Ma's bleach bottle. First disaster was bleaching new dark blue 501s. I remember a guy saying how he just ruined a new pair of 501s by bleaching em. We had to learn that if you're gonna bleach STF 501s, use old worn out ones. They're already startin to fade, and there's not so much damage done if you destroy em in the process.
It was summer, school was out and guys were left with a heap of old school 501s. We learned that summer was the time to bleach our 501s. We knew not to get too attached to these old 501s. They would soon be replaced by a new load of stiff crisp hard STFs just in time for the new school year. They were marked for the trash can at the end of summer. A few lucky pairs were saved and destined for the rag bag to be used for patching.
We faded our 501s in a bucket with light bleach. We had to know how much bleach to use and how long to leave our 501s in to soak. Many an accident occurred when our old 501s were left too long and got bleached too white. Then there was uneven bleaching leaving white streaks on our jeans. Those were mostly a happy accidents, even when our 501 buttonfly got a white streak. We had great fun playing in our bleachies for a couple of months. Then it was back to busting up our new load of STFS.
Today, I've stopped bleaching my STFs. I let nature take its course. But, there's that one pair of old 501s I'm considering... Summer is almost here.

yeah that's really interesting, thanks for sharing that Tim. Bleaching i think has a lot of history to it but since it isn't in style at the moment (just from my experience), people aren't talking about it as much. If it does come back into style, that is a whole big area for experimentation and experience. great post!
