Lookin' to communicate with folks who may collect G.W.G. denim jeans or jean jackets.
Prefer 1950's and 1960's styles, made from raw denim that was (potato starched). Also interessed in finding a pair of Boot Cut 'Scrubbies' size 32" X 32" with matching jeans vest, so 70's. These are hard to find and I'm down to my last pair. G.W.G. pearl snap shirts are also on my shopping list. (any condition - just want the labels showing.
I still have a pretty complete G.W.G. denim wardrobe but always lookin' to add to it.
If you're a fan of the brand, love to hear from you.

Hello,

So today I was browsing St Vincent De Pauls, when i came across two pair of what looked to be authentic Levi's, and they were both brand new. There was is no label indicating their size nor was there the infamous Levis patch on the back of them, but when I tried them on they fit, and they're definitely of better quality than what I purchased the other day, a brand I had never heard of, with much lesser quality and for more than double the price, so at $12 I purchased both pair.

My question is before I wear these new jeans out, are these of any value? Also, could these possibly be fakes? These jeans seem to fit me well, but I've also always been against wearing fake merchandise. I usually don't spend over $40 on a pair of jeans either, and would hate to wear these out if they were of any truly high value. Real or fake these jeans seem of pretty high quality.

Hey folks! I'm hoping that more people will post pictures of the progress they're making with their jeans. Looking at some of the big denim forums, there are a lot of people posting updates about their 501s (alongside the designer jeans), but they don't have the down-to-earth spirit of the folks on here. Come on, guys! Let's see your jeans!

On that note, I think it's sad this forum is (or at least has been lately) so quiet. I hope some lurkers will feel free to add to the conversation. Also, where is Ned? I haven't seen him around here since I joined up. We want to hear from you! Ned, I'm callin' you out! (cue The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly theme song! <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_lol.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" /> )

Howdy all.

First, as a new-comer, let me just say "thank you" all for contributing to this site! After spending, like, hundreds of dollars ordering (and fortunately returning) numerous pairs of 501s and countless hours scouring the Internet looking for the 501s I used to know and love, this was really the only site where I got the straight dope on the alterations made to 501s and ideas about how to approach finding and caring for a pair. This led me to...

purchase a pair of new with tags, deadstock, made in USA 501XX on ebay! Super cool, until I washed them. Now I have a problem I have never seen. The fabric is literally like a blanket. It is woolly and soft, not thin and firm (at least as much as denim usually is). There are even little hairs or threads that are coming out of the fabric and can be rolled with the palm. This is after three washes in hot water with 7th Generation detergent. The inside of the "denim" has the diagonal lines that it should, so I am not inclined to think these are real crude counterfeits. The seller was reputable.

Anybody else have this problem? Am I doing something wrong? Thank you!

Hey Guys,

I think that this is a relevant topic. OK, we all wear 501s or some other jeans, but what comes between us and our denims? Boxers, jocks, briefs or nothing.

Unless I'm going "formal", nothing comes between me and 501s. This includes raw unwashed rigid STFs. This could be considered a bit of "torture" to some folks, but that's part of breaking my 501XXs in.

Amazon and Zappos appear to have different names for 501 STF colors than those found on Levi's and other retailers's web sites. For example, in dark blue colors, levis.com has Rigid Selvedge, Indigo, and Postal. Amazon has Rigid (with no other qualifiers) and Knight. Zappos has Rigid and Blue-Green. It seems like most other retailers use the same colors as levis.com.

Can anyone explain the different colors on Amazon and Zappos? Are they different names for the same colors? Or are they completely different colors?

Thanks for the help!

Hey all!

I'm planning a post coming up that will be a round up or summary of how the cut and style of the jean has changed over the years and especially more recently. It's pretty easy to find historic info about them, especially because of the LVC line, but the newer changes are a bit harder to track. Please help me out if you have any info about changes to the jean style/cloth/manufacturing within the last 10 or 20 years. Thanks!

What do you guys think about cutting the legs off your ole beat up STFs and wearing em in the summer heat?

Don't see many guys into cutoffs around in California. Cutoffs used to be popular. A very practical use for cast off 501s with holes in the knees. Wear em to the beach, etc. Useful on hot humid days.

I wasn't gonna wear cutoffs this summer. But, found a ratty ole pair of cut off 501s at the bottom of my closet, and am enjoying em now. Little reaction when wearing these suckers on the street. So, if it pleases you, do it. What is the opinion of the rest of you?

i've been looking for people from the community for a couple years now to write some material or moderate the forums but noone has really been interested. i'm still open to that so let me know if you are interested.

I've noticed a lack of photos of jeans' progress on the boards. There are quite a few pics of progress (and even contests) on some other denim boards, but I'd rather look at the progress of 501s here on these boards with you good folks! (some of the other "denim enthusiast" boards seem very pretentious, which is very confusing to me. Pretentiousness about jeans? That's like being snooty about hamburgers!) That said, I thought I'd post some updates on the pair of 501 STFs I'm working on. Others, please join in and post some pics of your pairs! <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

Here are some pics of my new STFs at 2 weeks. I actually took these a week ago today, so they now have an additional week's wear on them from what's seen in these pics. I've worn them a TON already (I'm lucky enough to be able to wear jeans during work hours), and I've done some physical activity a couple times (hiking) that's helped wear them in. I'm planning on doing some car work soon, so that'll be good to wear them in as well. I'm sure the wear is pretty standard, but I'm happy with them so far!

I'm planning a wash soon. I think they might be getting a touch smelly, and I want to give them a fairly natural wear pattern... in other words, I don't want to over-think it. To me, while some of the pairs that have been meticulously planned out do look cool, they don't have that classic look to them. I've tried looking at some "real" wear patterns (pics of vintage Levi's on eBay is an excellent place for this, btw), and on these pairs you don't see such exaggerated honeycombs and extreme contrasts, etc. I want mine to be more like the classic ones, so I think the best way of going about this is just not over-thinking it, washing when I feel it's time as opposed to a set # of months, etc.

At any rate, I think the wear looks pretty cool thus far. Others, please make posts with your jeans!

Hi, My first pair of Levi's STF were purchased in the early 1960's at the Bullring in Birmingham, England and cost the princely sum of £4-19-11d at the time my weeks wage was £5-2-6d, so as you can see almost a weeks wages. Sat in the bath to shrink these wonderful denim's sent all the way across the pond from the USA. I recently bought another pair of 501's STF, the address of the sender was somewhere in Tucson, Arizona. Went through the same procedure of nearly half a century back -although slower in jumping in and out of the bath - not the same though, the ticket inside the Levi's said made in Egypt! Can you imagine a world in which an American icon is no longer produced in the States, how iconic is that? It's like getting a bespoke suit from Savile Row, London that ain't from Savile Row. Like buying a Panama hat that's not made in Ecuador.

A suggestion for keeping them 'clean' and dark: No soap when washing. I have washed my STF 501s together for a couple years now. I wash 3 to 4 pair at a time, by themselves, and inside out. After visiting different sites and reading many comments about how much guys like the deep, dark color of the denim, it makes sense to me to machine wash them without soap. They're just getting a really good rinse, and dry, each time. I feel it supports the macho ruggedness of the jean. When washing my other jeans I use a tablespoon, or 1/4 of the recommended dose, of environmentally friendly liquid laundry soap (Costco's for me).

When I became a huge Levi's fan in the early 90ies and a pair of 501s was the most sought-after garment for teenagers, there were some of the best commercials ever for these great jeans on air.
Throwback on "Introduction - Hello, all!"

Hello! Just making my quick introduction.

Currently working on my first pair of STF 501's! (I would say "501xx," but the label on mine only says "501." Is this common?). I just did the soak yesterday, and the perfect fit that everyone talks about is great! I'm planning on doing another shrink in a few more days after wearing them exclusively, short of sleeping.

I recently became interested in Levi's again (wore them when I was a kid). I thought I'd try different fits, so I bought a pair of 505's, 527's, and this pair of STF 501's. I wanted to get the original jean, so I thought why not go with the original original and get the STFs! I wanted to get Levi's again because I wanted to get more of a traditional masculine jean. For several years I've been wearing a baggier sort of jean. It never really fit me, and it only struck me recently that I should go for more of a man's man jean.

My fiance and I are both very "old souls" despite being still fairly young, so it makes sense that I've gravitated toward good ol' Levi's. As I've been scouring the web (including this wonderful site!) I've become obsessed with the whole aura of Levi's and particularly the advertising for 501's from the late 80's and early 90's. Fantastic stuff!

I think this is a fantastic site with a lot of wonderful, helpful people! I'm so glad I found it; you folks are great! Right now I'm specifically trying to get a feel for how to lighten, soften these jeans without ruining them... I've been carefully reading the cautionary tales of overwashing. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, guys and gals! This is a great community here!

I was just curious how many of you wear denim jackets as well as jeans.

I have sort of an ambivalent relationship with them. I had a highly faded on with patches on it for years which i loved. then i got a great deal on a "Big E" rigid denim jacket ($40 or something real cheap) but i hardly wear it! It fits me great and looks good but i just can never find the right outfits to wear it with.

Hello all,

Has anyone seen these new Levis selvedge STF jeans? They are on the Levis website.

http://us.levi.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4213660&cp=3146842.3146844.3146854.3194290.3692024

A couple things seem different about these than the regular STFs.

1. The fit description says "sits below waist" as opposed to all the other 501s which say they "sit at waist"
2. The photo portrays the jeans as a little slimmer and lower rise than the other STF photos
3. The patch on the back says 501XX instead of just 501.
4. Ive never owned a pair of selvedge denim, but i assume the denim is a bit higher quality
5. the full price is $98 on the levis website as opposed to $40 for the regular STFs
6. The selvedge STFs only seem to come in length 34 or less. I called a couple Levis retail stores. Not many of them carry the selvedge STFs, but some more major stores do. I called the Georgetown, DC store. I asked about the 34 length and she said that is the longest that they come in. She said that it is truly a 35 though, even though it says 34. So I guess they incorporated the shrinking into the size.

Having had 2 pairs of the regular STFs and loving them, I compulsively ordered a pair of these new Selvedge STFs. I normally get a 31x36 in the regulars. This time I got the 31x34 since that is the longest i could get. If it truly is a 31x35, this should be ok. I'm also thinking since they are a little more low rise, that they will sit a little lower and this will add some length for cuffing, etc.

Anyone had any experience with these? Do they wear, fade, contrast better? I also plan on doing these really well. No washing for AT LEAST a year.

On another note, i was recently in a levis store and noticed some new signage next to the STFs. They no longer are recommending that you size up in the waist. Levis, themselves, is advertising a shrinking process very similar to what everyone on this forum does. True waist size...true fit...get them long and cuff. Wear them for a year and then soak, etc. Very interesting - i think it is catching on.
