I was tryin to explain to one of my grandkids the proper way to STF his new 501s and he didn't believe old Nana knew what she was talking about. I was one of those old so cal hippies who used to shrink her 501s in the ocean..also surfed with them on many times...I'm a very pale skinned woman and would burn badly so I had to surf with long pants and shirts on...a sight to see! Because I'm slender hipped,(OK-I have no butt-been the bane of my life as a woman forever) I've worn 501s for 40 years @ work...climbing telephone poles. They just can't be beat for long wear, especially when bought on sale..and as a single parent, I was all for long wearing jeans back then. When I retired I bought a couple pair of womens jeans.....but they are never long enough for me. It appears that women's clothing manufacturers think all of us are 5'5" or something. I'm 5'9" with long legs and have to buy $150.00 women's jeans to get the length....thats just sick when 501s fit great for $36.00 on sale. Decided to go back to 501s this year, now that the tres expensive women's jeans have shrunk so bad--turning them into capris. I buy (if I can find them) 33x38 or 40 STF 501s, do the hot water initial shrink, wear them in the yard for a couple of weeks then wash in cold water in the washer. I usually do another hot water soak after that and wear them to dry after they have hung overnight (if it's summer). Tried the pre-shrunk 501s in 31x36 and it's easy to wear, soft right out of the first washing-but have found they tend to shrink up pretty bad over time, even in washed cold, if you dry 'em in the dryer. Wish I could find black STF 501s near me....didn't even know they were available. Great information Ned-thanks a lot again. I had the crotch hole patched and haven't had any more issues with that. There are holes emerging on the cuffs but i don't think i'm going to do anything about them. I'll post more pics soon! I agree that STFs should only be hand washed. You can control the water temperature better and the shrinkage. Also, the washing machine and especially the dryer are too hard on the fabric. Blue dye leaks out of even my oldest STFs. After washing, I have to wear them around the house a bit to get them back to fitting my body just right. BTW, are you still working on that same pair of STFs that you broke in on your honeymoon? They were getting holes in some of the wrong places with the last photos you posted. I'm now convinced handwashing is the only way to go because it keeps the creases for additional wear-in. they are getting higher contrast and i'm still washing away blue. The thought has just crossed my mind that brand new STFs have that smell of unwashed denim. Now, in a packed aircraft, wouldn't the person, other than Mrs. Ned, pick up that scent of new denim? Pre-washed jeans don't have that smell, but rigid jeans do. That's why we lv em. So, I hope that you don't sit too close to anyone on the plane who doesn't appreciate new STF 501s. Maybe, if you've lived in em for a while the new smell will have abated. I'm still wearin my "black rinse" 501s for formal wear. It freshened them up a bit which is important if your not washing them as i am. If you sun them right side out you may fade them with the sun. Thanks for letting us follow the progress of your work in these 501s. After wearing a pair of mine for two years before washing, I noticed the worn spots on the butt pockets, like my wallet was busting thru. Also worn spots on the inner seams from all the walks in em. The big change was, as I mentioned, the holes forming in the crotch. I don't want you to get the idea that I wore these STFs daily for two years. I kept em neat, well most of the time. I use my old STFs for any dirty jobs and keep my new unwashed 501s for "formal wear". At some point, like now, they become "Old Jeans" and get little respect. My STFs take about three washes at most before they get grungy. STF 501s are made to wear out. We can't stop it. Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to more pics. My idea of packing is how many pairs of 501s I can stuff in my back pac. I've whittled it down to three STF 501s, one 936 Wrangs and a pair of relaxed American Eagles. Am in doubt regarding the AEs cos I love my jeans tight. Doing the Ned thing and planning on using a pair of STF 501s for swimwear. This is what STFs were made for. Don't think I'll have any trouble in finding a pleasent beach and good surf. Want to give these suckers a good soaking. For swimming I'm using some STF 501s that I've washed only once in over two years. Loved to wear em raw, but, there comes a time. They're still brittle and feel stiff on me. The first time I washed em, the crotch started to bust. So, they're history anyway. I can finish these 501s off. Also, I'll carry a raunchy ole pair of STFs just for ripping up on the beach. My honey loves to help me wreck an ole pair of 501s. I'll wear a newish pair of STFs on the airplane. She prefers me in new STF 501s. Let you know how it turns out. We didn't shrink them in the ocean because we didn't even ever go swimming in the ocean! it was pretty windy with large waves, which were great for watching but not so great for swimming. So to fit with the idea of shrinking to fit your lifestyle, we decided to do our jeans in a private outdoor hot tub that we liked a lot and spent a bunch of time sitting in. I have some before and after pictures but I will post some more of just the jeans when I get a chance. This is more to just share the experience of the shrinking!
