I do the 501's every friday. A while back a wore a very tight pair of 511's on a friday and got some looks. That's funny the enforcer thought they were low rise <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" /> I don't think we have an enforcer but i'm sure someone would say something.

Hi Ned- About this "casual Friday" thing. What a pain! They first thought that when they brought in "Business Casual" it would be open neck shirts and Dockers five days a week. They had suceeded banning all jeans from the office, forever!

It didn't work that way. Howls of protests over not being allowed "jeans" even on Friday. So, we employees won and it was jeans on Friday.

I go to work on the trolley every day. It's packed with hardhat types, Navy boyz in civies and college guys- all in snug blue jeans and work boots. But, I'm not allowed to wear my 501s except on Friday!

Then there's THE ENFORCER. I did wear my STF 501s to the office on Friday. The big boss looked down at my buttonfly and made a face. Next THE ENFORCER showed up at my cubicle and started talking down to me bout wearing "low rise" jeans to work. There wasn't much use in explaining that STF 501s aren't low rise. Maybe it's a compliment for him to think I was wearing low rise jeans.

It isn't as if another three guys aren't wearing 501s on the job. It's not just me. You bet that, if the enforcer or the big boss is off on Friday, I'm into my tight STF 501s, washed once.

Do you have an ENFORCER at your office? Do you show up on the job in STF 501s? Hope you do.

Thanks Tim <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

Unfortunately I can't wear my jeans to work except for on Fridays! Crazy I know and it makes it a longer process to break them in for sure.

I'm making arrangements to be able to still check in here on the forum from Jamaica...hopefully I'll have some scenic pics to share as well.

A marriage made in Heaven! You lucky Dog!! How about on the job? Are you allowed to wear blue jeans to the office? Or do you work from home? They don't make you wear Dockers to sit in front of a PC. Even in Chicago.

While you're spread out on the beach with your honey, don't forget your buddies back home. Please give us an update.

I always thought that you ran with the rabbits and hunted with the hounds.

Hey Ned,

Thanks for your reply. Always a pleasure to hear from you.

I read on your profile that you're gettin' married, or may already be recently married. Congratulations!

The first thing that you must do is to set her straight on one thing- Nothing comes between you and your Levis. Is she gonna help you shrink your 501s?

oh no you didn't! east coast! west coast! east coast! west coast! lol jk <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" />

Apparently my new 501's were made just before the 2008 style switch so no luck for me yet in trying them. I am intrigued though!

Yeah i am toying with the idea of researching/buying a pair of wranglers. I would probably start with the 13mwz's unless someone has a real good case for starting with another style. They are comparable price to the 501's so it would be a fair comparison I think.

Stay on the beach and send some rays my way. it's been in the single digits all week!

Hi Ned (Again),

It's good to hear that guys east of the Rockies are keeping up with the latest jeans trends - you used to be a bit slow.

I personally haven't tried on a pair of 511s. I don't have the bod for it. Lucky you! These Levis look so tight with tapered legs that, I imagine, it must take all day to pull 'em on. I have my eyes on 514s- a bit looser.

As you know, L/S is now making STF 501s the old way- gone are the BIG butt pockets and loose thighs. Now, the STFs have the smaller, tighter butt pockets and hug your bod (that's why we lv them). The new STFs give me that gr8 Levi fit. I wear 'em into the ocean to break the suckers in. Lie on the beach for a bit and let them shrink up on my bod. Then, I go into the change room and pull off these wet nasty new 501s, towel off, and slip into a comfy old pair of worn 501s. Yep, February is beach weather here. Wanna come out and join me on the beach?

Wanglers- I do wear my cowboy cut 936 Wrangs several times a week. Lets say they're giving my 501s some competition. Skintight fit, you can do the same things with zips as buttonflys. I must say that current STF 501s are a crap product, but I do like the style and fit. I have one pair of STF 501s that I wore for a year without letting any soap or water near 'em. At the first washing, holes broke out in the crotch. This wouldn't happen with Wrangs- they're tuff jeans, man. Something for you to consider... But they're not 501s!

Talk to ya later,

Tim

Hi Tim!

It's great to hear from you! Thanks to you I'll never throw a pair out again! <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_wink.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

I have about 3 pairs of 511's I think and I really like them. I have been wearing the 501's the most recently though, especially my raw unsoaked pair.

Glad to see you hear, I hope to chat with you more on these forums!

Hi Ned,

I thought I'd lost you, and you'd switched to loose off brand jeans. Thanks for the contact!

Out here in Californy, it's a case of tight, tighter and super tight Levis. School guyz are showing it in 511, 514 zip Levis. Young guyz are also wearing 501s- these MUST be STF and they love to wear 'em raw and unwashed.

Hope you don't make the mistake like you did before and trash a pair of your old torn 501s. I'd love to take 'em off your hands. If you're out in San Diego, feel free to look me up. You know the dress code- STF 501s, the rest is optional.

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Klaus! thanks for the post I really enjoyed reading it. I would recommend though that you create a new topic for it so it is not just a response to my intro. You can do that by going to the Introduction forum and pasting it right in there as a new topic. Thanks!

Hello!

My name is Klaus and I am from Austria. This following post is an edited version of an e-mail I sent to Ned this week and he suggested using it an introduction for myself.

Let me a little bit about me and denim: I always liked the look of it, probably because my dad wore a lot of jeans when I was little. In the early 90ies I got my first pair of Levi's, an European 615 (similar to 505s) and I loved them, even if they weren't 501s. Levi's jeans were and are expensive over here, the 615 (discontinued long ago) was about $20 cheaper than the 501, which then cost about $90. Now 501s sell for about $100 or more! And they look like *&%§*", but more on that later. My first 501s were light stonewashed ones and irregular (a minor fault on the left leg). Irregulars sold for half the price, so they were affordable, even for a 17-year-old.

My first American Levi's were 555 or 550, they were nice and dark and looked unbelievable. Mind, there were no dark jeans available at that time, the darkest colour was medium stonewashed. These were a women's model, I guess, because of the slightly higher rise and tapered leg, a friend brought them from California, where he worked for some time. I didn't care, I loved them and nobody had jeans like them over here! Like with a lot of things, I overdid it and bought pair after pair.

Unfortunately, this friend stopped buying jeans in Cal, and found some store in a small town in B.C., Canada. Later I learned that the owner was some Chinese man and that explained, why the jeans looked so weird. I don't believe that they were Chinese, but probably some faulty ones or odd Canadian models. E.g. 501s with orange tabs, no sizes on the patch, different cut, weird looking 13MWZs,....etc. I dumped a lot of these jeans later, even if they had lots of wear left. I bought some American made jeans off my friends family, they were all used but US made. I guess I remember every pair of jeans I owned in my life....

In the mid-90ies I somehow aquired a Western catalog (Cheyenne Outfitters, now called Sheplers) and started to order jeans for me, my sisters and friends. This brought me my first STFs and I was fascinated by them. One pair was short due to Chey. Outf. false item description, they shrink more than two inches in lenght, as we all know. The other pair, now worn out, is hanging together with my first Levi's bought in America (555) as a sewn-together wall decoration at home. In '98 Levi's changed their policy and forbid to sell to destinations outside the US, so I had to use my old stock and switched (half-heartedly) over to Wrangler.

In 2004 I discovered ebay (thank God) and the first jeans I looked up were STFs, of course. I then fell into a craze and bought so many of them (and some 505s, and jackets) that I had to sell again as I didn't have the space (and, well, lost some weight and the sizes were all wrong, lol). I boycotted the post-2003 501s, not liking the different arcuate design on the pockets and after trying on a pair in a store. They simply didn't fit that good like the "older" ones. I recently decided to buy the newer ones, too, and it seems that there has been another change in fit...

I just thought I would start off with an introduction of myself!

Well, my name is Ned and I run this site. I have been blogging and making websites since about 2003 and I am completely self taught. It has only been a hobby, but I'm making plans to change that. My day job is an IT consultant supporting a group of programmers. It's a great company and I have no complaints.

I wrote an article about shrink to fit Levi's in the summer of 2007. I had just done my first pair and was really intrigued and happy with the process. I really enjoy clothes and tools and furniture and everything that get's better with age and use. For example, I own a lot of leather boots and really enjoy seeing them change and improve over years of use. I like sturdy, functional, and dependable things. I think this is why I was drawn to the 501's.

I also noticed that when I was shrinking my first pair that a quick google search turned up no howtos on the subject. I'm really glad I decided to share my experiences on this blog! I have learned so much more about them through interacting with others and researching the jeans. I get a lot more enjoyment out of them now then I ever thought I would.

That's all for now! Thanks for reading <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />
