Hey guys,I'm back <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_wink.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" /> I apologize for not stopping by more often. Things are well with the STFs I talked about before, ended up washing them once ever since, cold gentle cycle and hung to dry.

Last August I had family from Australia visiting,we took them to NYC which of course meant shopping to go with the sightseeing LOL. The Levis store in SOHO was quite pricey, found a OMG Jeans store nearby that was having a very nice sale so I picked up 3 or 4 pairs from them.

As I compose this post I'm sitting on my deck, wearing a pair of damp indigo STFs,enjoying this wonderful spring weather <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" />

Thanks guys.

I haven't had time to do another soak/wash all week due to work, just been wearing 'em after work for further break-in. I'm heading to MD tomorrow after work for another automotive event the following day (Sunday),bringing both pairs.

I'm off on Monday and will do another soak and/or wash to try shrinking the inseam just a little more. At the moment they look ok with lowtop sneakers, but too "bunchy" with hightops.

Hello Ed, welcome! <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

According to LS&Co, they put whatever tag is available on the STFs, so some have the "XX" and some don't.

STFs must be doing well if they make them in so many colours now.

Couldn't edit my last post, but Daniel in bright sunlight (it's almost noon here) I now see the slight shade of green, kind of a very dark aqua.

Daniel this new pair are Verde Rigid. They're darker than indigo but other than the greenish tint from the bath water I wouldn't call the color green either.

I didn't wear the new ones since they were still damp, but I'm wearing them in today in preperation for another car show/race I may be working next weekend <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

Speaking of the different rinses in the 501 STF, does anyone have any experience with the Verde Rigid STF, as seen here on Langston's? I don't really get where the 'verde' comes in, as there's nothing about the dye job that appears green to me.

Hey Ed,

You're getting good results. Nothing like busting in a new pair of STF 501 Levis! Sure beats buying them pre-shrunk off the rack. First, you miss the smell of that raw unwashed denim. With STFs, you really make your own jeans.

Remember, the more you subject your STF 501s to heat- hot water and the electric dryer, the more they will shrink. They never stop shrinking.

Wearing a snug pair of STF 501s to that outdoor auto event should increase your sales.

My STF 501s are getting so grungy that they're only good for dirty yard work and mechanic work on my truck. Still searching for that special pair of "black" shrink to fit 501s. The black rinse 501s are available in stores and on line at Sheplers, for example. They are more distinctive than the trad blue STF 501s- look sharper.

Keep us updated as you break in your new 501s.

What better way to spend a day off than to mess around with your jeans <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_wink.gif" title=";)" class="bb_smilies" />

Did another soak, this time taking a hot shower. Wore them for about an hour, threw them alone in the washing machine in a soapless gentle cycle, then hung to dry the rest of the day while I ran errands.

I got home a few minutes ago, still a little damp but I put them on. I'm pretty happy with the inseam length, still a little baggy/bulgy at the lower thigh/knee area compared to my Cols but a big difference for the better post-marinatiing/washing. I hope these dry completely tomorrow morning,I'm working outdoors at an automotive event selling shirts etc. and it would be a perfect time to break them in.

So, I think that anyone who buys STF 501s by mail order is taking a chance.

Yup,I learned that lesson only after discovering this place LOL. Live and learn.

The Mexs were still damp this morning, moved them from the laundry room and hung them in my spare bedroom with the windows open to speed up drying. I put my Cols next to them and it looks like the inseam has indeed shrunk, hope they're dry when I get home.

Hi Ed,

Welcome to the STF site!

Here in California STF 501s are available at regular retail stores like Macy's, or at outlets.

I went shopping a few days ago for a new pair of STFs. When I entered the outlet, I was greeted by stacks of rigid STF 501s. It seems that they'd just received a new shipment of Mexican 501s. BTW, here we refer to em as: Mexs, Cols, Guats, Doms, etc.

Anyway, I was surprised to find out the same thing you did. That is, the butt patch two horse label reads "501s" (not 501XX), but the cardboard attachments say "Shrink to Fit". And they're stiff like they should be.

I went to Pennys and Sears and found the same thing- loaded with Mexs, but some old Cols were marked "501XX". One thing about 501s- they're inconsistent in cut and everything else.

I've never had any luck with Mexs. I tried on one pair and found that they had a snug waist and str8 legs, but bulged out at the thigh. I've found this on other STFs. Can't accept my jeans loose at the thigh. I rejected em.

This is why I never buy mail order 501s. IMO each pair of STF 501s is different. Not only are Mexs different than Cols, but each pair of Mexs varies. That's why I always try on the raw unwashed 501s before I buy. I can judge how they shrink.

STF 501s are a crappy product, but we wear em anyway. For my Cowboy Cut slim 936 Wranglers, I always buy mail order from Sheplers. I know what I'm getting. They have a perfect fit and hang str8 and tight on my bod. So, I think that anyone who buys STF 501s by mail order is taking a chance.

Also, I've noticed different types (finishes) of STF 501s. First, the stiff as a board trad 501s. Then, shrink to fits that aren't quite so rigid, but stiff and trad blue. I was after the third type- hard 501s with a blackish rinse. Real hot, not black jeans, but a different finish. Have any of you noticed different types of STF 501s? The ones with a darker blackish rinse are the hottest in these parts.

Hello from NJ. I discovered Ned's FAQ while googling "501xx",still reading the other articles at this moment LOL.

It all started when my brother gave me a pair of 501xx last year, afterwards I pretty much stopped wearing my other jeans other than the (non-501) torn, grass and oil stained ones I use for yard work etc.

A new pair arrived today in the mail, but I'm a little concerned <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_sad.gif" title=":(" class="bb_smilies" /> My first pair are made in Colombia, this new pair is from Mexico. The inseam is supposed to be only an inch difference (original 29,new 30) but they look/fit much longer. When I tried them on the legs felt quite baggy. Is there a 501xx STF and a 501 non-xx STF? The originals say 501XX at the bottom left of the label, the new ones don't. But the cardboard tag it came with say "Shrink-To-Fit". Hopefully after the first tub marination (finished a few minutes ago) and overnight drip drying they'll fit like my originals. The new ones are Verde Rigids, the originals are Rigid Indigo to my knowledge...still waiting for an email back from my brother.

By the way I bought these from Eastbay, was ordering t-shirts and sneakers and browsed through their Levis stuff. I placed an order from Langstons (where my brother got my originals AFAIK) but they're not shipping until the 12th <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_cry.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />
