Jeans like this pair have been used for store display. Or did they actually sell, too?

Oh yeah, they definitely sell em that big. If you go to an online western outfitter like Langston's you can see they go right up to a 60" waist.

Yeah, those jeans are really something, huh? I like how the patch is spaced almost in the middle of the pants because the waist is so wide. I think at that point I would just wear sweat pants!

If they were cheaper I might even buy them just to use for patching up other pairs.

I wonder how many buttons there'd be on this pair of 60x32s !!! []

LOL, Daniel! Some years ago I actually considered buying one of these just for display. <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_mrgreen.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

hey guys,

you are all correct. 1 waist button, 3 fly buttons.

i just ordered a pair of 28" 34" in the verde wash. although i'm pleased with my current STFs (30"32" ; 29"32") i want to see if i can get sharper creases with a tighter fit and also get some stacking action going on. if all goes well, these will become my project!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info on how your STFs are sizing down to give you that gr8 fit.

I take it that Ian is counting the total buttons on his STF 501s, including the top waist button, not just the fly buttons.

My first pair of STFs when I was in HS were 29W and had three fly buttons plus the top button or a total of four. As I matured, by the time I was a junior in HS, I was into 32W STFs with four fly buttons plus the waist button. This has remained standard since then.

Therefore, kids 501s, if you can find em, start with two fly buttons, then as they grow up they get three fly buttons and, when you're in your prime its four fly buttons.

Starting at 38W, you get five fly buttons plus top button for a total of six. Too many buttons and I don't like the long buttonfly. I prefer the tighter shrunked up fly. If I could find three buttons 501s, I'd go for it. Don't need so many buttons on your fly.

Also, there are the usual irregularies in the manufacture of STF 501s. Little consistency. Sometimes the fly buttons aren't lined up properly. An extra fly button could be added or omitted. But we wear these STFs anyway. So long as they're cheap and we can raunch em up.

BTW, I'm still wearing my black rinse STF 501s raw and unwashed and love em. They're loose, but will keep em that way for the time being. I'm compromising in wearing briefs under em to keep my 501s clean longer.

Hi Ian!

Usually, from waist size 29 and (I guess obviously) downwards 501s have only three fly buttons (plus the waist button). I recently got a pair that has four buttons on a 29" waist, but there is so little space on the fly the 4th button is not needed. They placed it at the lowest possible place on the fly and I don't even open it when undressing. On a new pair (W29), they misplaced the three buttons so there is too much space between the waist and first fly button and the lowest cannot be opened easily. Otherwise, the three on the fly work well on size 29. However, if you buy STFs with a 30" waist, which sould theoretically end a being a 29", there a four fly buttons.

Welcome Ian! glad you are here <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

I've been considering trying the size down to see how it looks so thanks for sharing your experience with it. I was just noticing yesterday how my pair or true waist 501xx are getting tighter in the waist and thighs even without washing them. It's something that is strange to observe but does happen: the once baggy and rigid raw denim continues to fit to your body for months after the initial soak. It's good to hear that even after 4 months you are still enjoying the size.

Also, interesting about the 4 buttons. I wonder if klaus or anyone else has observed also?

welcome again!

first off, i wanted to thank ned and all of you guys on this forum. about 4 months ago, i decided to check 501 stf's and got lots of info from this site...and still am...there's so much stuff!!! <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

i normally wear a 30 waist...and my 1st pair of stf's were bought true to size. i've since then tried sizing down to 29 and am digging the results. i know that 501s usually have 5 buttons (my size 30s do), but my 29s only have 4 buttons! i just bought a black pair of preshrunk 501, size 30 and those also have only 4 buttons. anyhow, i kinda dig the 4 button thing as the rise is a little bit shorter, but not too short.
