Are any "Tremors" fans here? Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are wearing Levi's jeans in this movie. Ward's jeans are looking like 505s to me, Bacon may wear them, too. The are nice, slim looking. Bacon wears a Levi's denim jacket with a brown collar but no lining. As far as I know the lined jackets had a brown corduroy collar, so this one is interesting. I always thought it might be leather.

Of course the majority in this forum is into STFs, and so am I. In my opinion, LS&Co's 501 STFs are the only original jeans. They started it all. It's really amazing how this great product survived essentially unchange over such a long period of time.

However, I do like jeans/denim in general and do like other styles and brands, too. For me, jeans have always been an American product. Therefore, I prefer the Big Three (Levi's, Lee, Wrangler). Coming to think of it, I do not own any other brands except one pair of Guess jeans (I'm still looking for the screen accurate version of Back to the Future) and two custom made jeans. I am not interested in other brands, but that doesn't mean there aren't other jeans that couldn't tempt me.

I love rigid jeans. The look is classic, and it fascinates me when looking at a pair of faded jeans to think of how differently they looked when they were new and starchy. Every now and then I take all my pairs out of the closet and inspect them. I love stonewashed jeans, too. From a purist's point of view this may be despicable, but that's the way I am. As long as they finish has an even wash (no artifical whiskers and stuff). I grew up with them and loved them, there were no dark indigo washes available in the late 80ies/early 90ies in Austria.

I'm not very much into "coloured" (twill) jeans. Jeans are blue to me, the twill version simply don't have the look. There are/were coloured denim jeans (the new STFs, for example), but as I said, jeans are blue.

There are the Vintage lines, each of the Big Three has them. I once had the 1901 501XX model. But when talking about jeans I usually have styles in mind which the average Joe can afford.

Fit-wise, a regular fit suits my body most. This would be 505 or 13MWZ territory. I don't know the "new" 505s, I heard they are too baggy. I only know the 90ies/late 80ies cut (slightly tapered), they fit me well. I had a look at the Lee regular fit jeans, they are reasonably priced and the fit looks good to me. What I like about them (as well as Wrangler's Cowboy Cut jeans) are the high back pockets. Who wants the back pocket on the thigh? That's a downside of Levi's 505s, the pockets are way too low.

The '93 501 model has a great fit for me. The leg opening isn't too big, this model has a slight taper. The new ones are straight.

13MWZs are good, the thigh could be a little slimmer. A perfect fit for my body could be a mixture of them with the 936DEN slim fit style. Wrangler's indigo color doesn't look as "classy" as LS&Co's and the broken twill denim weave doesn't have the classic denim look, these are slight downsides for me. What I do like are the colored jeans from this style, here the bwoken twill weave does it for me.

I haven't tried Wrangler Rugged Wear jeans, but their regular fit style might be worth a try.

One thing that bothers me a lot recently are labels, trademarks and such stuff. When looking at clothes I almost get the feeling of looking at advertisments. So on some jeans I do remove them, this works well on rigid jeans as there will be no sign there was something sewn onto them after one or two washings. I quite like the look of "naked" back pockets, too, so sometimes I remove the stitching. Of course I do have unaltered jeans as well, I just like variety.

Wranglers....discuss

just kidding!

I don't have any experience with them but they seem to be another rigid denim option in a similar price range to the 501's.

What are people's experiences with them. Any favorite styles in the rigids?

lowest-fi on "Bike rider looking to cover butt"

Hi everyone, just registered. I ride bikes to pay rent. I was a bike messenger, but when the economy went sour, I moved on to food delivery in hopes of better pay. Point is, I ride bike a lot and it destroys my jeans. I have way too many pairs of jeans with gaping holes in the butt. Lately I've been going to discount stores and buying whatever is cheapest and fits the best, but going through jeans that I'm not super fond of as fast as toilet paper sucks.

Could one of you help me out with your extensive denim knowledge and recommend some sturdy shrink to fit jeans?

I'm looking for some shrink to fit jeans that might have a chance of holding up for at least a few months. I like a more skinny fit, it keeps the jeans out on my bike chain but I don't like them skintight, too restricting and I can't wear thermals underneath on cold days.

Really dark blue (getting close to black) would be a great color, but durability is more important. Also, they should be reasonably priced, I don't make a ton of money and don't want to drop a bunch of bills on something I'm just going to destroy.

Started out looking at levis stf. The black rinse ones sound like the perfect color for me but I've heard people calling them 'paper-thins' and that they're only mid-weight denim (12.something oz, right?) so I'm discouraged about buying a pair of those.

Heard wranglers hold up pretty well, so I'm interested in those. Heavier weight denim and the weird weave means sturdier, right? And the rigid ones will shrink to fit, right? I had a pair that seemed to hold up okay... for a while at least. Those were pre-shrunk though.

Any other suggestions? To they make kevlar reinforced jeans? I'm looking for something bulletproof. Stf Carhartts?

I have a pair of Wrangler 13MWZ that is weird. They are the first Wranglers I got, a friend brought them from Canada some 16 years ago. Never did I see a pair like this and for the interested, I made some pictures to compare this special pair with a "standard" one. So all cowboys and 13MWZ wearers might want to take a look. To make things easier, for the course of this comparison I will call the weird pair simply "Weirdo".

Just to mention the colour when new: prewashed/rinsed indigo

The first difference is that the jeans were "Made in Canada". At this time, the Wranglers still were made in the US. The inside tag (which is located on the fly for Cowboy Cut Wrangler jeans) does have all intructions in English and French. I didn't take a picture of it as it has faded too much over this period of time.

The cut:

To see the difference in cut, I folded the jeans and put them together at the waist and outseam on top of another pair of 13MWZs (I used my black chocolate 13MWZs as they are 30/30, sorry for that, but my indigo 13MWZs are of a different size). You can see that Weirdo's rise is much higher and the seat is narrower. To me it's almost like a hybrid between 13MWZs, 936DENs and a womens cut.

Here is another picture, this time with a blue, standard pair on top of Weirdo. Have a look at the saddle, Weirdo has the typical slim fit style, straight saddle, the standard pair has the V-shaped saddle common on regular fit jeans.

The fabric:

Wrangler Cowboy Cut jeans have a different type of denim (most of them, there are some prewashed colours with a diagonal denim weave) - the "broken twill". It was invented to prevent the leg twisting of the usual, diagonal denim weave. It looks like a zig-zag pattern and was once dubbed "Wrandam" or "Wrangom", one of the two, I'm not sure which. Weirdo does have a traditional weave (on top, standard broken twill pair is the pair between desk and Weirdo).

Minor details:

The neolite back pocket patch is different - Weirdo has the patch usually used on boot cut Cowboy Cut models. (Weirdo on the right)

Weirdo has a different pocket stitching, you can see the "W" has the diamond stitch as Levi's has in their arcuate while the standard 13MWZs are stitched with single needles.

Weirdo has rivets with "wrangler wrangler" stamped onto them in a round pattern, usually rivets are blank.

The small, black Wrangler tag on the saddle seam was different on Weirdo (missing by now) - it had the classic Wrangler font used on other Wrangler jeans (e.g. Rugged Wear) as opposed to the Cowboy Cut's "ropey" font.

Weirdo's waist button has "Wrangler Wrangler" on it, with the words parted by silhouettes of horses. As on the rivets and pocket patch, the font is the classic one. 13MWZs do have the "ropey" font on the waist button.

The inseam:

Cowboy Cut jeans do have flat inseams to prevent uncomfortable pressure on the inner thigh when being in the saddle. Weirdo's inseam is the usual double felled inseam found on a lot of jeans. (standard 13MWZ on the left)

I hope this has been interesting to some of you. If anybody does know about the Weirdo pair, please post your information. I doubt these are women's jeans, as the seat is too slim and the waist is cut too straight, but I might be wrong as I don't know much about lady's Wranglers. They simply might be irregular jeans.

I checked out the Sheplers website today. Now most guys here aren't into prewashed jeans, but this information is interesting:

13MWZ and 936DEN in colors stonewash and bleach are made of 15.75oz denim!! The prewash process may affect durability to some extent, but I believe these are almost as hard wearing as the rigids. Wrangler's broken twill denim is nearly indestructable, anyway.

Wrangler does a great job with their Cowboy Cut line. No wonder Levi's has lost ground in the Western segment, as Wranglers are superiour in almost every aspect.
