About the leather patch, my preshrunk 501s in the "dark aged" color have a real leather patch unlike the usual patch from most stores. All of the patches at the Levi store were mostly this way on the preshrunk 501s. These are made with the thinner weight 11.5oz denim which is very soft and comfy but not the same as the STF experience. I can send a photo of mine if you like.

Last year, I bought 8 pairs of deadstock STF's with the '501xx' designation on the patch, off of eBay. I did pay from $49 to $70 per pair, but the bonus is that I got heavy-weight denim, from 14 oz to maybe up to 14.75 oz. I can say this for sure, besides just feeling thicker, at close inspection, the denim has a 'hairy' look. This is the good, thick, strong, long lasting stuff.

they've been leaving off the double x for a couple years now. i'm pretty sure theres another post about it but I don't remember entirely. I know the LVC line has leather tags but i didn't know that there was any pre-shrunk 501's with the leather. that is pretty cool if you don't want to drop 150. still not worth it to me because i really like to break in my own pair.

as my last post in the Red tag thread stated that i decided to take a trip to a Levis store to have a few questions answered. ill get to the wtf parts in a second. but the only problem is i think i left with more than when i got there. so my first question was answered about how many (r) red tabs are made. the answer was 1 in 8 after i corrected the sales attendant that it cant be 7 in 8. my second question was why they existed and got a "i have no idea" from all of the staff. no this is where things started to get really f'in weird. like always i was drawn to the stf's and the store kinds decided to go with just 1 color, rigid aka indigo. i was looking for the black or night colors so that i could write a follow up on another post but they had none. thats when i saw the new stf's

this has to go in it own paragraph

i dont know if this is normal or if something f'ed up is going on (because all of the stf's i have seen have an XX after to 501 on the tag) but when i was looking at the stf's on the rack most of them had no xx after the 501 on the tag. i called the nice clerk over and asked her what the hell was going on and she told me that the XX denoted that it was a stf and i told her it was a little more than that but after a little banter i showed her 2 pairs of stf's off the rack and some had the xx and others didn't. she had no explanation for this at all. now i have grown up with a guy who is an expert on Levi's (i would go into detail about him but it would take forever) but he could tell about when and where a pair of jeans was produced by the color of the red dye on the tag so i looked at that first. there wasn't any change in color that i could tell but the print of the 501 and the sizes was definitely in a thinner type set. so am i just confused about something or is this a wrf moment where they are getting rid of the XX after the 501 on the tag. if this is some kind of error i would love to know cus ill go out and buy a few pairs right now

the next thing i saw that was really cool was a pair of 501's that was preshrunk and very lightly vintaged. they came in one color that i saw which was gray but what i thought was so f'n cool was the tag was leather. yes real leather not thicker card stock or anything but real dark leather. they cost about 20 dollars more than the stf's but a real leather tag... how cool.

please people respond with more info and such because the people in the store could not answer most of my questions. i want to call Levi's but i am holding off until i get some feedback from you

that small 5th pocket was originally designed to hold a watch but since then that has not been the case. right now that pocket is large enough to fit a few things. i, as a smoker (who is trying to quit) noticed it is large enough to hold a Zippo lighter, snugly and perfectly. i haven't used them for Zippos in a while, and those jeans that i did, are few years old (ill buy a new zippo and test them again). On my 2 brand new pairs of stf's, that i ordered less than 2 weeks ago, i noticed they were the perfect size to fit a state id or credit card with a little of the card or cards sticking out the top. also a pair from a year ago that has already been shrunk holds the old cell and id's but with the id's / credit cards sticking out more because they are not as deep (at least i think so because i have not shrunk these but the large difference in depth could not because by shrinking such a small area). i can think of a ton of other uses for the fifth pocket and i will most likely make a new topic for it unless someone wants to do it before me

You're right, Tim, there simply has to be a fifth pocket on a pair of jeans. Even if I don't use it. I just don't know what to put into it. And the way I am wearing my jeans, that is rather tight, there wouldn't fit anything, anyway. By the way, right now I am sitting here in my newly shrunk, wet STFs and waiting for them to get dry. Experience follows in another thread...

Hey Tim! I kept a usb thumb drive in the 5th pocket of an old pair which left a usb thumb drive fade mark on it....not the coolest fade mark in the world <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" /> since then i've given more thought to what i keep in my pockets but haven't come up with anything really good for the ol watch pocket. ...maybe a ol watch? <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

Hey Guys,

That little end tag fell off an old pair of my broken in STF 501s. I didn't know what to do with it. So, I just stuffed it into the coin/ watch pocket of my Levis. There it'll stay til these STFs get tossed.

BTW what do you jeans guys use that small 5th pocket for? Or, do you use it at all? A pair of 501s or other denims can't be complete without that 5th pocket. How about suggestions? College guys use that pocket to store their rubbers. Can you top that?

great thread, very interesting! I just checked and I didn't rip the tag off the pair i'm currently working on. I think i usually do but these are a no wash pair so i think it's fitting that it's not ripped off. it's more hip hop that way too lol

Cam, I never considered that obvious rationale behind the tag. I feel stupid, heh. Fascinating stuff though; retail history is one of my many obsessions.

As for me, I rip the tag. I'm thinking of using one to make a slingshot. It's the perfect size for the little pouch you put your "ammunition" in.

I have always removed these tags as they were made to be ripped off. Sometimes I put them on the pin board, throwing them away after a while, but of the '93 cut I have kept some of them. Also, I keep the cardboard pocket flashers, guarantee tags and size stickers from some models.

Thanks Cam! That makes total sense - it explains why the size is printed on the little perforated tag as well. They probably cataloged those little tags, and when a customer would come in requesting a certain size, they could check for the perfed tag before going in the back and rummaging through the stock of jeans. very cool.

Does anyone actually rip this tag off of their new jeans? Do you keep it somewhere else as a souvenir?

I like to think of it as a STF badge of honor. But, as I am still fairly new to STF, i wonder if it will eventually just fall off after a lot of wear?

As I understand it, it used to be the retailer who would tear off this tag in order to keep a record of what sizes they were consistently selling. I assume this was done to make it easier to order and stock the most popular sizes. Nowadays, inventory control is, for the most part, computerized and automatic, so the tag is something of an anachronistic relict--like many of the 501's other features. <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

Hi All, It's been a while since i've been on. Ned - The Jamaica pics look great!

I wanted to start a thread about the Levis STF tags - you know, the little extra piece that extends off the faux leather, cardstock Levis label. The little perforated peice that says "Yea...these are fresh from the factory...raw...and untouched". The one that screams "rip me off" but WE NEVER DO. Why? Because it is just so cool.

Does anyone know the history of this tag or it's purpose in general? Or does anyone have any interesting tag stories?
