Hi Marius and welcome! <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

There's a very good chance your 501s aren't as high as they used to be. There have been many changes to the 501s throughout the years, and so they're radically different than the original Levi's miners used to wear.

I dunno if this forum is still allive. But is it true that the old 501s were higher in the waist?

Because I just bought some brand new ones, and I wish they were higher. I have a hard time believing these were the kind of pants physical workers like gold miners used.

Hank,

Great commercial! I responded more in-depth in the recent commercial thread... so as not to deter this thread too much more. I'm a very tangential person, so I have a bad habit of getting people off topic. Sorry, folks! <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" />

Throwback, I don't have a picture of any personal "golden years/retirement" jeans. Yet.

I can post a clip of a new pair of Levis 501. It made such an impression on me when it came out. "Man the jeans are so hard, they scuff you."

Levis Hard Jeans

Levis had all these great commercials. I'm not sure if they're still making great commercials, as I don't watch television as much these days.

Thanks a bunch for the info, Hank!... and also for the illustrative photo! I actually have nearly zero sewing skills, but my father is surprisingly good. Maybe I could get him to fix a beloved pair in the future.

It would be a shame to retire a beloved pair to their "golden years" as you said, but it would be better than bringing them to the point of no return.

Do you, or anyone else, have a pic of a "golden year" pair of STF 501's. Would love to see what they look like!

Here's a relevant commercial:

In regards to your long john method, do you typically use these worn out jeans as winter work clothes or are they so worn that you wear them more as lounge-about type of clothes?

Throwback, I use them as lounge wear as any additional work could/would really tear the crotch and/or knees further.

I've seen one method for reinforcing the crotch of jeans that looks like it'd be fairly easy for someone with basic sewing skills.

I've yet to try this and it may come in handy as a means to prolong the life of the jeans.

If you Google: +denim +"crotch reinforcement" you'll get some ideas, especially with the images option.

Personally, by the time the jeans need crotch reinforcement, they're lounge jeans. The crotch reinforcement would simply be a means of prolonging their "lounge life." Something about the crotch and seat area of the jeans coming to it's end lets me know the jeans are in their "golden years" and shouldn't be pushed too hard.

Knee rips and patching is another story. I can still work in jeans with knee patches. That's one of the reasons I'm not throwing out old jeans. I plan on using the good bits as reinforcements for when the knees start to give out. This might also look pretty cool as the jeans that are being used for the reinforcement parts will have different character from the originals. When I end up doing this, I'll be sure to make a thread on it, as it really does justify it's own pictorial.

Regarding the crotch wearing out, one method I use is to "retire" these types of jeans to the home front. If jeans have the seat and/or crotch worn a bit too much to be worn out in public, I save them for the winter months and wear long johns underneath. The long johns provide the necessary security for any exposure accidents. With long johns underneath, a pair of crotch busted jeans is good for at least a winter and usually two or three before the hole(s) get too big for even home use.

If you don't live in a climate that justifies long johns, I just don't know what to tell you. Donate? Not sure who'd take them. Save them for material? That's getting into pack rat territory. Put them in a box on the side of a country road like a box of kittens, free to kind hearted souls passing by?

I tend to find that the denim on both top and bottom works best for people in occupations that demand it (e.g. railroad worker, rancher, etc.). For casual dress, I prefer denim on either top or bottom but not both at the same time.

I wear denim jackets when I'm wearing casual trousers, twills, etc. on my legs. I recently acquired a slim fitted, rigid indigo trucker jacket from Levi's that goes with pretty much anything. Deep indigo is the perfect compliment to earth toned trousers. I haven't washed the jacket yet, as I'm hoping to have a similar fading effect that I also go for with jeans; I plan on waiting as long as possible before that initial wash.

I also have a suede jacket of unknown brand (got it off eBay and there were no tags - could be a one off from a skilled worker) that is an exact replica of the slim fitted Levi's trucker jackets. It has all the style of the denim trucker jacket, but the material being a tan suede allows me to wear it with jeans without going off into what I've heard others call the "Texas Tuxedo" look. It's perfect for casual wear and dressy enough to wear on a date (the suede gets compliments all the time). The suede gives it that elegant appeal and the style (slim trucker) is a familiar classic cut that is instantly recognizable without being cliche. I love it so much I feel guilty that the denim jacket isn't getting as much wear as it deserves.

I've worn button=fly 501's for years. But lately, they don't seem to fit as comfortably. Specifically, the inseam does not fit snugly against my crotch, but rides down an inch or so and chafes on my thighs. Has there been some change to the cut? Or is it just my mid-life changes that I'm feeling?

I am new on that excellent forum.

What I found out last days, unfortunately, levis 501 style can be different even in the same season.

I have 2 pairs of dark 501:

- Marlon, coded 501.0162 (rinsed dark indigo), 2010, size 32x34
- Med Dimension Dry, coded 501.0782 (dry, dark indigo), 2010, size 32x34

You can find both of them on eu.levi.com, bought in autorised Levi's store.
The different is in front pockets shapes and in coin pocket size (sic!).
Front pockets in 501.0782 are so tight and small for my big hands, where in 501.0162 are fine and comfortable.

Width of coin pocket in Med Dimensional Dry 501.0782 is 3,5 inch.
Width of coin pocket in Marlon 501.0162 is 4 inch.

To be honest with you, Levi's is unpredictible. They can not keep the same style, as they said they would do (both models based on 1947 edition).

I thought that every, each model is precisely described, specified in Levi's company in order to give specification for factories around the world.

PS. Sorry about my poor English...

Na nun Klaus, Ich suche eine Erklaerung. I always thought that James Dean was wearing 'Lee Riders' in Rebel but perhaps that was in Giant. I know for sure that Rock Hudson wears the tightest pair of Lee Riders I ever remember seeing on screen in this movie. There is also a very hunky black stoker in the movie, The Last Voyage who spends the entire movie in soaking wet, skin tight, dark denim jeans - they may be 501's can't remember for sure. Worth a boo on utube though, somebody had him dressed that way for a reason and this is long before the 'Denim Nation' phenomenum we enjoy today.
Who knows what kind of jeans Chuck Conners wore in the Rifleman T.V. series?

Definate fan of denim jackets. Like 'der Schweizer', I love to double 'em up. Often wear an older sleeveless jacket over top of a rigid dark denim jacket or vice versa. When I'm feelin' extra raunchy I have an old Levi's Jean's jacket with lots of cool chrome studs / very nasty. I dress western (quasi) biker all the time though - so my tastes won't be universal. I'm an incurable strutter type, so the rowdier the better for me. One of the nice things about being in my 50's is that I can wear pretty much what I like. Peer pressure disappeared decades ago. Yippee!!! Enjoy hangin' with my biker buddies - we're not bad boys but we sure get the looks at bars and rest stops. Somehow or other, people are just really curious about leather and denim clad people. I read an article in 'Psychology Today' a few years back that alluded to the sensuality of denim and leather as a trigger for the libido. It's always triggered mine 'six guns'
Greetings to all the serious denim fans on the site!

Enjoyed reading posts re: rigid 501's and Wrangler Cowboy Cuts. I hate washing the stiffness out of a tough pair of jeans. For me it's the stiff, dark denim look that makes me want to wear them in the first place. Bin etwas erstaunt wie viele Deutscher und Oesterreicher dabei sind die sowas auch moegen. I was in Berlin three months ago and saw alot of dark denim and 'double denim' in several clubs. Here in Western Canada we call that a 'Prairie Tuxedo'. Would enjoy hearing from anyone who has an interest in retro G.W.G. jeans and jackets. I have about 20 pair of G.W.G. bluejeans several pair of button fly jeans from the 1950's and the rest range from 1970's through the 1990's styles. I enjoy wearing my 1950's G.W.G. button fly's under my chaps when I'm riding my old Norton 750. I have the matching jacket which I had restyled into a vest
to wear over my black leather jacket. It's a fun 'tough' look and totally retro. I get lot's of comments from older bikers who remember the style of jeans from their younger years always ask me where the heck I found them. Out West they are relatively common in thrift stores and even garage sales. I have most of the older styles because of a fishing trip I went on 7 years ago. It was near a small town in North Central Alberta and an old dry goods store was going out of business. I spoke with the owner
Dieter Ebner. He was a native of Hanover who came over to Canada after WW2. He was thrilled to have someone to speak German with and we hit it off immediately. I asked if he had any jeans and he kindly took me to a crowded attic room where he literally had boxes of bluejeans, overalls, coveralls 'the works' I couldn't believe my luck.
I picked out 7 pair of jeans and jackets for myself and a few friends - now I'm sorry that I didn't buy it all - with e-bay vintage denim sites I could have made a fortune.
If there are any folks out there who love the old style G.W.G.s 'the stiff 'bull denim'
variety - that took years to break in - would enjoy hearing your stories. Auch von Deutsche oder Fransoesische denim fanatiker, wuerde ich gerne hoeren.

Hello, guys and gals; I'm just a newcomer here, so make me welcome, - I'm from Armenia, Yerevan. I've read many of your comments here and decided to leave my first comment today. Sure we had not a big jeans choice here in the ex-Soviet Union, but Armenia is a bit outstanding in this group - a diaspora, having been spread all over the world, and the biggest one of the Armenian settlements is in the U.S. (over 2 millions of people) have supported their relatives and friends at the home country, sending them all the possible and impossible gift packages. It was a bit romantic - of course the Soviet propaganda, lead by the Communist Party and the KGB did a lot to prevent the so-called Western style influence, but the time did it's perfect job. Western movies, that have provided big gains to the cinemas, started to demonstrate the best Westerns in the Soviet U, and this have made a revolution. Many of us were buying Levi's , Wrangler and the Lee Rider jeans for the extremely expensive prices, but were definitely outstanding and noticeable in the mass. As for the models, I'd say a very important thing for at least, myself: the U.S. shouldn't have stopped the Levi's production in it's borders in 2003 (if I'm not mistaken), they had to make them even expensive but not to discontinue the U.S. made Levi's. To say frankly, the quality's not changed much in jeans, but is fully broken in jackets - they don't look the same aggressive and Western as before......Sure the 501 was, is and will always be N.1 for the physically well built youngsters and adults ,it's a classics - for all those, who never wears them with anything else than the Western boots, well-polished, shorts or highs, but never with those rough wheel-like boots - they'd not look different in mass. To say you more, and I do wear the Levi's since being a 7 year old year kid, I've had lot's of 505 (good in both the orange and red labels until the 2000's, when this model came very close to 550), 507, 510, 511, 527, and many others, but I'm really in love with the 517 model - it's really became even better in it's latest version, looking very cool with anything you wear at the top, great model, in one word. Besides, if you've noticed, their cloth is much heavier and rich, and the price is a bit lower...It suits with the most shoes fashions, so the 517 is excellent. But the last time I was passing by along Melrose Blvd., L.A., I've seen a craziest Levi's model in one of the jeans shops over there - unfortunately, I've forgot the model number - it's very like 517 (it's bootcut too), with the iron or copper small cups at the upper angles of the rear pockets, with no belt stitches - you'd feel yourself Charley Bronson or Clint Eastwood in it, not less, believe me. If anyone of you knows this models number, please let me know.
AS for the other brands, I prefer the Wrangler's Cowboy Cut model, which is also very effective from all points of view and is making a real concurrence to Levi's 501 model - it's the same classics and looks both aggressive and sexy. The third brand for me is Lee Riders, but those made before 1990's, when they removed the black label from the right rear pocket's left angle - thaat was a wrong step....So, boys and gals, nice to meet u, sorry for the brainwashing - Sam from Yerevan, Armenia.

i have two Levi's slim fit trucker jackets. I think they look great when wearing jeans especially with a checkered fitted western shirt. But still i am hesitant to wear them. Btw i recently bought a H&M denim shirt as well.

Well not willing to wait to find the time to make a trip a decent store, and keeping in mind the reasonable price(I've spent twice this on certain jeans) I ordered a pair of 501 STF's from the official levi's online store, there summer sale is on now so it was $40(instead of $46) and by entering one of my emails for their news letter as a new customer I got free shipping, so not so bad. I ended up getting a size 30x34, the length is certainly long and have a pretty significant cuffs atm, an original crease from being folded at the bottom of the leg conveniently was in just about the right spot for the cuff.

At a 30 inch waist I find it still a bit too loose, and if I were going to order again I'd try at least a 29" waist(I might dare even a 28" if I don't gain any weight by the next time). Date of manufacture is September of '09, in Haiti. Its not quite as snug on the top as my experience with what I believe would be something like a ridged '66 cut.(If only it were, those fit amazing... but a somewhat different model) But still I think they fit tolerably well especially with my belt, maybe they'll be a bit better then now after the first soak, but I'm going to get a fair bit more wear into them before that.

I've got about 40 hours into them right now, and I'm starting to see signs of the first creases on the back of the knee, and around the top. Got a fresh pack of white tshirts and I turn a head or two every time I go out, I love it, heh.

Like most it seems that I found the forum here after finding Ned's blog posts about STF 501's during a web search.

I am interested in denim jeans now, but I have to admit that during my teenage years I largely rejected blue jeans, along with most of the other values of my generation. I spent most of my time as a teen in twill cargo pants, camo army fatigues, or kahkis(for dressing up).

It was only after a while after highschool that I came to appreciate jeans, outside of my previous experience. In high school what I knew as jeans were poorly fitting, generally light blue, washed out, baggy pinstripe pants, often times with a horrible fake whiskering on them.

A few years after highschool I realized I could keep the few pairs of jeans I had darker and closer to the nice indigo of a new jean simply by only washing them inside out, only did I notice and start to appreciate the more interesting aspects of denim. The genuine fades and whiskers(and lack of pinstriping) you get when jeans are properly cared for and of at least a certain minimum original quality, such as the Levis 501's. Even if some have said the quality of Levi's has gone down over the years I must say there are certainly far worse choices.

I've had ridged jeans before, but I'm certainly looking forward to getting my hands on a real pair of shrink to fit 501's. Unfortunately the local stores here primarily stock washed jeans, along with a smaller selection of ridged jeans. So it will be a bit longer before I can make a trip to a store with a decent selection.

Size-wise from what I understand I might want something in the range of 30x33 for STF or maybe 30x34, In the rest of my wardrobe a 32 inch waist is far to large, 30 inch fits well but is still just a bit roomy, if I wanted to go without a belt, as many seem to do, I would guess a 29inch might be an option. However I am concerned that after a soaking a 29inch waist it might be just a bit too small. For length 30inch is generally just a slight bit too short and I wear anything with a 30 inch inseam lower on my waist to compensate, 32 inch inseam seams a bit too long, and even when wearing them natural I tend to destroy the hems quickly. I've never cuffed a pair of jeans and generally wear them true to size(or as close as possible), I'll have to see once I get my first pair of STFs how I feel about the cuffs while wearing them raw.

My best estimate of my true current size is 29 1/2 x 31, a bit hard to find a decent fit. I don't seem to find many pairs of anything with a 31inch inseam, it always seems to jump from 30 to 32, but it maybe its just a side effect poor local selection.

Outside of my intro post and talk of STF 501's I'm looking forward to making another post concerning my recent denim interests/activities; Small teaser, they are Levi's, and they haven't been discussed on the forum as far as I've seen.

Hi Ned-big thanks for the classic STF 501 article. I was tryin to explain to one of my grandkids the proper way to STF his new 501s and he didn't believe old Nana knew what she was talking about. I was one of those old so cal hippies who used to shrink her 501s in the ocean..also surfed with them on many times...I'm a very pale skinned woman and would burn badly so I had to surf with long pants and shirts on...a sight to see!

Because I'm slender hipped,(OK-I have no butt-been the bane of my life as a woman forever) I've worn 501s for 40 years @ work...climbing telephone poles. They just can't be beat for long wear, especially when bought on sale..and as a single parent, I was all for long wearing jeans back then. When I retired I bought a couple pair of womens jeans.....but they are never long enough for me. It appears that women's clothing manufacturers think all of us are 5'5" or something. I'm 5'9" with long legs and have to buy $150.00 women's jeans to get the length....thats just sick when 501s fit great for $36.00 on sale. Decided to go back to 501s this year, now that the tres expensive women's jeans have shrunk so bad--turning them into capris.

I buy (if I can find them) 33x38 or 40 STF 501s, do the hot water initial shrink, wear them in the yard for a couple of weeks then wash in cold water in the washer. I usually do another hot water soak after that and wear them to dry after they have hung overnight (if it's summer). Tried the pre-shrunk 501s in 31x36 and it's easy to wear, soft right out of the first washing-but have found they tend to shrink up pretty bad over time, even in washed cold, if you dry 'em in the dryer.

Wish I could find black STF 501s near me....didn't even know they were available.

Great information Ned-thanks a lot again.

Hi Tim,

Yes these are the same pair. I had the crotch hole patched and haven't had any more issues with that. There are holes emerging on the cuffs but i don't think i'm going to do anything about them. I'll post more pics soon!

Hi Ned,

Enjoyed the update on your STF 501s. I agree that STFs should only be hand washed. You can control the water temperature better and the shrinkage. Also, the washing machine and especially the dryer are too hard on the fabric. Blue dye leaks out of even my oldest STFs. After washing, I have to wear them around the house a bit to get them back to fitting my body just right.

BTW, are you still working on that same pair of STFs that you broke in on your honeymoon? They were getting holes in some of the wrong places with the last photos you posted. Please let us see photos of how these old 501s are doing now. Thanks! Tim

did another wash 2 days ago and they keep looking better and better. I'm now convinced handwashing is the only way to go because it keeps the creases for additional wear-in. they are getting higher contrast and i'm still washing away blue. Here's what i did:

cold water with a few squirts of dr. bronners
soaked inside out for 20 minutes or so
aggitated them a bit and rinsed them a bit but not too much (this is a benefit of using dr b's)
dry flat

Great comments! Hey, Klaus, although i grew up in Vancouver, i have relatives in Austria and i have spent some time there on holidays, over the years. In '82 my friends older brother, was really into dark indigo Levi's (not sure which model) which he bought off the rack in Graz and at the time this look somewhat bucked the trend. Later in '86 they were wearing European branded(not sure of the name) lightly stonewashed jeans, with a tapered leg and i remember thinking that the zippers on the rear pockets were the essence of cool! ha! In '88 the big deal was Diesel and i thought of importing them into Canada where they didn't exist at the time. Never got round to that, unfortunately. Btw, it was in '88 that i bought my first two pairs (1 black, 1 indigo) of Levi's 501 STF's on a shopping trip to Bellingham, WA.

How my tastes have changed, now, when it comes to denim it must be raw. And, when we're talkin jeans brands, the older and more iconic, the better. Levi's is the king by far, then Wrangler followed by Lee. However, today, Levi's is the only company , with their budget priced, 501 STF, that has the cut/style and details down pat. Wrangler's current products are only so-so and I'm not sure if Lee even makes a raw denim product anymore(pity). Up in Canada, GWG, was tops but i never owned a pair of their jeans (no raw denim) and they were often overlooked by city folk. In the UK, you've got Lee Cooper, Italy - Rifle and Japan - Edwin (I am sure there are some other long established brands that i have missed here). Of these three non American brands I would only be interested in their jeans if they very closely replicated the cut/style and details of Levi's 1947 501 jean. I can't speak for Lee Cooper and Rifle but I do know that Edwin has a pair that closely resembles the iconic Levi's model and with some welcome additions - slightly longer, bigger, lower rear pockets.

In the 80's, in vancouver, denim jackets were often worn by thug types (Lee Stormriders and Dayton boots were their uniform) so being the sheltered kid that i was i did not wear. In '92, i bought an LL Bean barn coat in stonewashed denim and wore that coat for years but being stonewashed, IMO, it didnt look good with the indigo jeans, that i was wearing at the time. In '96 i found a used(from '80's) GWG (Great Western Garment Co. fr. Canada) slim fitting jean jacket in indigo, that i wore a lot and that matched up well with indigo jeans. In '98 it was a Gap sherpa lined, indigo, denim jacket which was awesome and got it in an XS so it fit proper. It also went well with indigo jeans but for some reason i didn't wear that with indigo jeans that much(had green jeans at that time). I last wore that Gap jacket in 2004 at which point i moved to China and didnt bring with. I havent worn a denim jacket since but would love to get another. I like the Dickies Denim Blanket Lined Chore Coat a lot but it doesn't come in a small so it might be too big. The Wrangler denim jean jacket from Shepler's looks decent but it might also be too big. And of course love the Levi's Trucker jacket(slim and/or regular fit) but would have to try one on to see for sure. IMO, indigo denim jackets(IDJ) and indigo jeans go great together but IDJ's and stonewashed jeans together don't work and vice versa. And stonewash and stonewash- nah.

Having now a pair of preshunk 501s in the lightweight "dark aged", I can tell the difference between my new shrink to fits (no XX on the tag sadly and the preshrunks. The preshrunks seem to fit a little better in the rear, slightly higher and wider back pockets and a bit more fit in the theighs. The back yoke is also not as low on the preshrunks. I wish the STFs were like these except still maintain the thick denim

Im lovin' my brand spanking new pair of 501 STF's and on a cursory glance, i can't help but be awed by how much they resemble the 1947 jean. Which brings me to the point i want to make about the ever changing style of the 501 STF jean. I mentioned in another post that i had no idea why i had lost my interest in 501 STF jeans back in the late 80's but now it is clear. Part of the reason was because of a taste aberration on my part - namely Marithe Francois Girbaud but the primary reason for 'gettin out' was due to the style of the 501's at the time. The fit was slim and the waist seemed too low. What irked me even more, however, was the placement and design of the rear pockets. They were way too small and placed too high up on the rear and the arcuates were not deep. The only reference i had at the time was the occasional photo of the vintage levi's that were hot in japan and this influence had somewhat filtered into Vancouver. I was not a denim head by any means but i knew what i liked. Flash forward 20 odd years and LS& Co have outdone themselves with a bang up job on their latest offering - huge, low slung pockets with a deep arcuate, straight, semi wide legs and opening. WONDERFUL!! One last word to you Ned: why dont you like all CAPS?
