I've read many of your comments here and decided to leave my first comment today. Sure we had not a big jeans choice here in the ex-Soviet Union, but Armenia is a bit outstanding in this group - a diaspora, having been spread all over the world, and the biggest one of the Armenian settlements is in the U.S. (over 2 millions of people) have supported their relatives and friends at the home country, sending them all the possible and impossible gift packages. It was a bit romantic - of course the Soviet propaganda, lead by the Communist Party and the KGB did a lot to prevent the so-called Western style influence, but the time did it's perfect job. Western movies, that have provided big gains to the cinemas, started to demonstrate the best Westerns in the Soviet U, and this have made a revolution. Many of us were buying Levi's , Wrangler and the Lee Rider jeans for the extremely expensive prices, but were definitely outstanding and noticeable in the mass. As for the models, I'd say a very important thing for at least, myself: the U.S. shouldn't have stopped the Levi's production in it's borders in 2003 (if I'm not mistaken), they had to make them even expensive but not to discontinue the U.S. made Levi's. To say frankly, the quality's not changed much in jeans, but is fully broken in jackets - they don't look the same aggressive and Western as before......Sure the 501 was, is and will always be N.1 for the physically well built youngsters and adults ,it's a classics - for all those, who never wears them with anything else than the Western boots, well-polished, shorts or highs, but never with those rough wheel-like boots - they'd not look different in mass. To say you more, and I do wear the Levi's since being a 7 year old year kid, I've had lot's of 505 (good in both the orange and red labels until the 2000's, when this model came very close to 550), 507, 510, 511, 527, and many others, but I'm really in love with the 517 model - it's really became even better in it's latest version, looking very cool with anything you wear at the top, great model, in one word. Besides, if you've noticed, their cloth is much heavier and rich, and the price is a bit lower...It suits with the most shoes fashions, so the 517 is excellent. But the last time I was passing by along Melrose Blvd., L.A., I've seen a craziest Levi's model in one of the jeans shops over there - unfortunately, I've forgot the model number - it's very like 517 (it's bootcut too), with the iron or copper small cups at the upper angles of the rear pockets, with no belt stitches - you'd feel yourself Charley Bronson or Clint Eastwood in it, not less, believe me. If anyone of you knows this models number, please let me know. AS for the other brands, I prefer the Wrangler's Cowboy Cut model, which is also very effective from all points of view and is making a real concurrence to Levi's 501 model - it's the same classics and looks both aggressive and sexy. The third brand for me is Lee Riders, but those made before 1990's, when they removed the black label from the right rear pocket's left angle - thaat was a wrong step....So, boys and gals, nice to meet u, sorry for the brainwashing - Sam from Yerevan, Armenia. Hey, Klaus, although i grew up in Vancouver, i have relatives in Austria and i have spent some time there on holidays, over the years. In '82 my friends older brother, was really into dark indigo Levi's (not sure which model) which he bought off the rack in Graz and at the time this look somewhat bucked the trend. Later in '86 they were wearing European branded(not sure of the name) lightly stonewashed jeans, with a tapered leg and i remember thinking that the zippers on the rear pockets were the essence of cool! ha! In '88 the big deal was Diesel and i thought of importing them into Canada where they didn't exist at the time. Never got round to that, unfortunately. Btw, it was in '88 that i bought my first two pairs (1 black, 1 indigo) of Levi's 501 STF's on a shopping trip to Bellingham, WA. How my tastes have changed, now, when it comes to denim it must be raw. And, when we're talkin jeans brands, the older and more iconic, the better. Levi's is the king by far, then Wrangler followed by Lee. However, today, Levi's is the only company , with their budget priced, 501 STF, that has the cut/style and details down pat. Wrangler's current products are only so-so and I'm not sure if Lee even makes a raw denim product anymore(pity). Up in Canada, GWG, was tops but i never owned a pair of their jeans (no raw denim) and they were often overlooked by city folk. In the UK, you've got Lee Cooper, Italy - Rifle and Japan - Edwin (I am sure there are some other long established brands that i have missed here). Of these three non American brands I would only be interested in their jeans if they very closely replicated the cut/style and details of Levi's 1947 501 jean. Beside that I also really like the APC and Nudies with their extreme fading potential also like Edwin Sen. Most important to me is, that I wear my jeans and denim jackets always in unwashed raw condition only. That means, I'll never wash my pants or jackets no matter what happens. I just use my stuff in 3 steps: First as nice office clothing, then for free activities like climbing and at the last stage for the real bad jobs out in the dirt like repairing machines, working in the forest and so on. And during the last step I don't care how filthy or stinky they are. They just have to stay outside from the living room anyway. And I could never ever throw away any piece of denim and try to build up the largest raw denim rag collection. So if you guys like Tim or Cam or Bill have any really beaten up rag items, never throw them away. Keep them alive as long as possible, and when you really don't want them anymore, don't forget that their is a safe place in Zuerich Switzerland, where I try to rescue as many as raw denim rags as possible so that they can survive for ever. I was glancing at the latest edition of "Men's Health" magazine yesterday. It has a full length pic of Jason Bateman on the cover attired in snug buttonfly blues, not 501s. On the inside contents page there is a note. It reads, " A man's real best friend are his blue jeans." Then, it tells you to "flip" the cover to get a breakdown of latest jeans styles. I think you'd agree that nothing beats a pair of hot jeans. You can always count on your jeans. Seems we aren't alone. By flipping the cover, you get an alternative cover with a guy into jeans. Besides the $100 plus ads for jeans inside the magazine, there was a full page ad for L/S with a hunk showing his bubble butt into new crisp 501 blues. My fav jeans are any pair I'm currently wearing. Today it's the faded pair of STF 501s I picked up for $7 at the local thrift shop. I can't describe the hot patina, natural fade of these 501s. Nice tite fit too. They are museum quality. That isn't to say that I don't also love brand new rigid unwashed STF 501s. These are popular around here. I also find I'm into my Wrangler 936 slim fit Cowboy Cuts more and more. I prefer the fit of the Wrangs and they're tougher, but don't have all the "bells and whistles" of the buttonfly 501s. Also own some American Eagles, a bit on the loose side. In my opinion, LS&Co's 501 STFs are the only original jeans. They started it all. It's really amazing how this great product survived essentially unchange over such a long period of time. However, I do like jeans/denim in general and do like other styles and brands, too. For me, jeans have always been an American product. Therefore, I prefer the Big Three (Levi's, Lee, Wrangler). Coming to think of it, I do not own any other brands except one pair of Guess jeans (I'm still looking for the screen accurate version of Back to the Future) and two custom made jeans. I am not interested in other brands, but that doesn't mean there aren't other jeans that couldn't tempt me. I love rigid jeans. The look is classic, and it fascinates me when looking at a pair of faded jeans to think of how differently they looked when they were new and starchy. Every now and then I take all my pairs out of the closet and inspect them. I love stonewashed jeans, too. From a purist's point of view this may be despicable, but that's the way I am. As long as they finish has an even wash (no artifical whiskers and stuff). I grew up with them and loved them, there were no dark indigo washes available in the late 80ies/early 90ies in Austria. I'm not very much into "coloured" (twill) jeans. Jeans are blue to me, the twill version simply don't have the look. There are/were coloured denim jeans (the new STFs, for example), but as I said, jeans are blue. There are the Vintage lines, each of the Big Three has them. I once had the 1901 501XX model. But when talking about jeans I usually have styles in mind which the average Joe can afford. Fit-wise, a regular fit suits my body most. This would be 505 or 13MWZ territory. I don't know the "new" 505s, I heard they are too baggy. I only know the 90ies/late 80ies cut (slightly tapered), they fit me well. I had a look at the Lee regular fit jeans, they are reasonably priced and the fit looks good to me. What I like about them (as well as Wrangler's Cowboy Cut jeans) are the high back pockets. Who wants the back pocket on the thigh? That's a downside of Levi's 505s, the pockets are way too low. The '93 501 model has a great fit for me. The leg opening isn't too big, this model has a slight taper. The new ones are straight. 13MWZs are good, the thigh could be a little slimmer. A perfect fit for my body could be a mixture of them with the 936DEN slim fit style. Wrangler's indigo color doesn't look as "classy" as LS&Co's and the broken twill denim weave doesn't have the classic denim look, these are slight downsides for me. What I do like are the colored jeans from this style, here the bwoken twill weave does it for me. I haven't tried Wrangler Rugged Wear jeans, but their regular fit style might be worth a try. One thing that bothers me a lot recently are labels, trademarks and such stuff. When looking at clothes I almost get the feeling of looking at advertisments. So on some jeans I do remove them, this works well on rigid jeans as there will be no sign there was something sewn onto them after one or two washings. I quite like the look of "naked" back pockets, too, so sometimes I remove the stitching. Of course I do have unaltered jeans as well, I just like variety. The "toughs" who challenge him to a knife fight near Griffith Park observatory in LA are all into 501 indigo Levis. This was enough for Californy school boys to beg their parents to buy em Levis and wear blue jeans to school. In California, still, most public schools don't have "uniforms" and guys can show up in torn jeans. Before Heath Ledger died, his 501s and Jake Gyllenhaal's 936 Wrangs were auctioned off. Both wore 34W X 36L jeans. Heath didn't wear the same 501s for 20 years. It just appears that way. He and Jake had several pairs of "distressed" jeans. Heath changes into a new pair of dark blue 501s for the Thanksgiving scene. The folks who own these Levis and Wrangs made a good investment. OK, I don't want to forget "Into The Wild", Sean Penn's film about a young college grad who, instead of becoming a stock broker, cashes out his bank accounts and sets off on a journey that takes him across the USA. Based on a true story, and set in the 1970's, the guy, played by Emile Hirsch, wears 501 blues. As his money runs out, his Levis get more and more grubby. He lives the life of a hobo as he climbs onto trains. He ends up in Alaska living in an abandoned bus. By this time his 501s must reek. To top it off he kills a moose for food and gets blood all over his torn 501s. As the real character left a photo of himself wearing tan khakis and standing beside the bus, so Emile wears khakis for this shot. "Into the Wild" and "BBM" are two great movies that aren't to be missed! When watching films or TV shows (especially the older ones), I always check out which jeans the actors are wearing. Especially the 80ies are interesting, as stonewashed jeans were introduced, but the majority of the jeans worn still were dark indigo. Nice cuts, too. Beverly Hills Cop parts I and II (1984, 1987): Axel F in 501s. Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982): Sean Penn & surfer dudes in faded STFs. Top Gun (1986): Cruise in faded 501s. As the movie is from 1990, he must be in very shrunk 505s. A still photo shows this clearly, his bulge is on full display. This is how to sell tickets. Ward is also in tight Levis, probably also zips. I nominate these three flicks as the best Levi/ jean movies of all time: BADLANDS (1973). A young Martin Sheen goes on a killing spree with his girl. He's a bad guy and he lives in his 501 Levis. Sometimes just his hairy chest over his 501s. Of course, his Levi basket much in evidence. The story is set in 1959, so, it's a sort of period piece, like the two below. Yep, guys still wear 501 Levis. ALMOST FAMOUS. Cameron Crowe, the producer and writer, based this film somewhat on his own experience as a rock star groupie in California in the 1960-1970s. While 501s were the thing in California, he puts all his guys into zip fly Levis, not a buttonfly in sight. If you want to see guys into snug 505s, this movie if for you. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (2005). This drama is really all about 501 Levis versus 936 Wranglers. Heath Ledger plays Ennis, a rancher type. He hangs out in what appears to be the same pair of faded 501s during the entire 20 year time span of the film. Jake G., is Jack. Jack thinks he's a cowboy and shows his hot bod in super tight Cowboy Cut Wranglers the whole time. He moves to Texas. In case you don't get the message, cowboys and Texans wear Wranglers, ranchers and farmers wear 501s. After that movie, I'm still can't decide between Levis and Wrangs. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are wearing Levi's jeans in this movie. Ward's jeans are looking like 505s to me, Bacon may wear them, too. The are nice, slim looking. Bacon wears a Levi's denim jacket with a brown collar but no lining. As far as I know the lined jackets had a brown corduroy collar, so this one is interesting. I always thought it might be leather.
