Were those raw from when you started? No pre-fades or distressed of any sort? Looks like you got some mileage out of those. If the crotch is still good on those, you could use long johns and get in a winter season before sending them to that great denim scrap heap in the sky.

I wear a 33x32 in the preshrunks for a nice fit. I bought a pair of 34x34 shrink to fits - indigo 501-0000 - jeans and after washing twice, the fit is very nice and similar to my preshunks. The waist in the STFs is a bit more firm and so feels slightly "tighter" but that is because the new preshrunks have lighter weight denim and stretch a bit more. My length is absolutely perfect. When raw, the 34s are a bit looser but again with the thicker denim they are not as forgiving as the light weight preshrunks (especially the 11.5 oz preshrunks!) so they can be worn raw at an inch higher than my preshrunks without sliding off my butt.

Hi guys, new to the forum! This great site got me all excited to try out a pair of raw denim but I have a few questions on sizing. I'd like to start with a pair of STFs or maybe higher quality LVC 1947 501s. My question is, how do I size the 501STF so that the fit is exactly the same as my modern fit (non-antifit) preshrunk 501s? I wear a size 32 in preshrunk 501s that stretch out comfortably, so if I go with 32 STFs will that give the same fit or will it be even slimmer? What about LVCs, should I go up to a size 33 for the same fit (I've heard the new 501 fit is the same as the 1947 fit, but I've also read that 1947s are even slimmer, which is correct?)?

Thanks in advance!

So I did a second soak in the tub with very warm water. Little bleed, additional shrinkage in the length, but otherwise not much effect. All my STFs turned out fine after a few machine washed, so this pair will too, I guess. Now it's still a little large and long. The colour looks great. For this pair I decided to delete all trademarks (arcuate stitching, red tab, waist patch) to go for a different look. I have to many similar looking jeans (501s). So the STFs are bare looking. Stiff as hell, can't wait to wear them thorouhgly.

After wearing just about every other Levi's over the years except STF 501's I just shrank my first pair of STF 501's. I usually wear 32/32 so I bought 32/34 STF at my actual waist size based on what I have read here and other places. I wore them for a couple of days before shrinking them. I sat in a tub of warm water for about 30 minutes and then wore them until dry (that was seriusly wierd!). It took about five hours for them to dry completely and I'm fairly happy with the results. The length is just about perfect so if they continue to shrink later on that may become a problem. I sized them at my usual waist and they feel great but are still a little loose in the rear. Since I knew I was shrinking them today I tried to buy a back up pair of 31/36, sized down in the waist and up 2 in length just in case but couldn't find them in a store (most of the lengths were 30 & 32, leading me to believe that the buyers at Macy's bought too few longer sizes and bought them like regular jeans). I like the look of dark denim so I won't be washing them or trying to fade them any time soon.

So far they won't stand up by themselves but they still feel great. Depending on what happens to this pair I'll decide whether or not I need the 31/36's. Thanks to everyone whose advice I've followed so far!

Guys here in southern California wear their new 501XXs raw and unwashed, cuffed and a bit loose.

I start by doing the same. It's so easy to trash a new pair of STF 501s- they're made to wear out and look grubby. The trick is to keep em looking crisp and new. The brand new rigid 501XXs hide the dirt well if you don't work your butt off in em. When it's time for a first soaking, I slip my 501s on and take a warm shower. Otherwise, I wear them into the ocean or give em a gentle washing in the tub. One time I wetted my STFs down with a garden hose (a semi-wash). I always use lukewarm water and never put my 501s in a washing machine. Always sun dry my Levis, never use a dryer. This helps to preserve the "new" look and keeps em a bit "stiff". The shrinkage is gradual. That's the way I like it.

Nothing makes a pair of shrink to fits wear out faster than constant washing. I delay the cleaning as long as possible. I wear 501s on the job. My boss says Levis are ok so long as they're neat. I keep some old broken in STFs in a store room in the warehouse. When I'm required to do filthy sweaty warehouse jobs, I climb into these old work pants. Once they get raunchy, my STFs get no respect. I give some of my beat up 501s to the other warehouse dudes. After about three washings, my STFs are showing wear. By five or six washings, they're shot.

I buy my STFs at an outlet store. I try em on before I buy. Each pair of STFs fits differently. When they're on sale, I buy several pairs. When a pair gets beat up, I just pull another new rigid pair outa my closet.

Always glad to hear comments from other guys who are into STF 501XXs.

Thanks for the replies, guys! <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

Cam, I can understand why you are not going for strong contrast fading any more. It's a little depressing to "work hard" for years to make the jeans look great, only to see shops full of jeans with artificial fade marks.

Ned, your picture made me really laugh! Great one!!! It seem that you have straighter legs than I, mine wouldn't stand because of a "weak spot" at the knees. <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_lol.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

I know you recommend going with the real waist size and not the +1 approach, but I had the jeans before I discovered Ned's site. Mine seem still large, next time I'll try a real 29". The jeans will of course shrink down more after the washing machine, but I'm still considering a second soak in rather warm water to make the fit perfekt.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, guys. i love reading them <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

One of my favorite pics after the first shrink of my first ever 501xx's. Stiff as hell <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

I have done the second soak right away and didn't see much difference so I don't do it anymore. They won't take that long for the stiffness to decrease so i say jump in them and wear them for a bit.

Feel free to post pics if you want! I'm going to update my thread on the progress of my current jeans. It would be cool to see yours as they break in as well.

I shrink my 501's in a tub of hot water for about 1/2 hour by themselves. I don't wear them while they are shrinking. Nevertheless, same as you, I can actually observe them shrinking 2-3 inches in length. After 1/2 hour, I put them on and I go outside and do some work, letting the 501's dry on my body. After an hour or so, they are pretty much dry.

I wonder if wearing them during their initial soak may prevent them from shrinking to their full potential. It probably doesn't make much difference, but I prefer to shrink them by themselves and get as much shrink out of them as possible and then let them stretch back out to my body's proportions during the drying process. Regardless of how the initial soak is conducted, I feel that the critical step is letting them dry on your moving body because this sets the creases and dictates, in large part, how the jeans will come to sit on your hips.

I only give my jeans one shrink. After that, I wear them as much as possible. Their initial extreme stiffness (which is normal) will moderate with a few wears. I usually wear them until they are as filthy as I can stand (~ 4 months) or until I do something like drop a bowl of salsa in my lap (which is what happened with my last pair). Then I wash them, inside out, on the gentle cycle and hope for some nice natural fading. I used to be obsessed with wearing them until they displayed extreme fading at the creases, but that look has lost much of it's appeal to me as pre-distressed jeans have made even real fading like that look fake and contrived.

I think Ned covered all this in his FAQ, but when you shrink your jeans in this manner, it's important to go with your true waist size because with repeated post-shrink wearing, the waist will stretch back out. In fact, if you're after a slim fit, then you should probably consider downsizing one inch in the waist.

I don't know what advice to offer on a second shrinking. If they feel too large, then it may be worth a shot. I'd be a concerned about ruining the creases you've already set though.

I finally did the shrinking procedure until the end, which means I let the jeans dry on my body. I had LVC 501's and 936 Wranglers tub soakings, but took the jeans off to dry, so this was my first "real" shrink-to-fit procedure.

It was a warm day, so I spontaniously decided to do it, initially I planned the shrinking to take place at the lake when going swimming. I put some towels on the floor to cover the way from our bathroom to the door and got started. Using warm water, I stayed in the tub for almost half an hour. You can literally see how the legs get shorter. After releasing the not too blue water (I thought it would be more coloured), I cuffed the jeans to be able to walk and did a first cleaning of the tub while standing in it. Dripping was minimal, so I went outside. There was a light breeze and with the sun, the jeans dried very quickly. I wouldn't have expected that, really. There was actually no dripping after a few minutes, I returned to the house, prepared dinner, ate outside on a garden chair, did chores and so on. The XXs dried in about 2 hours!! I took them off with only the multi-layerd portion (back pockets and a little on the front) being damp. Man, the jeans almost stood by themselves! They were even stiffer than before. Now I'm not sure if this is normal, it could be our water which has a high hardness (my jeans are very stiff after usual washings, too). When putting them on the floor it looks like the lower half of myself is lying there, lol.

One thing I could tell right away: the 501XX's cut is different to the cut of the prewashed 501s. It's higher on the waist and sits way better. The longer back pockets have shrunk to pre-shrunk proportions, too.

What do you guys reckon, should I do a second shrinking right away or wear the jeans for a while? I'm asking because the are very stiff and still a little large.
