Hank on "knee stretched out?...."

I just finished (as in ten minutes ago) walking dry a pair I soaked and rinsed in the washing machine.

I pulled them out of the washer and put them on. The only knee bending I did was to put on my shoes. Unfortunately that was enough, but I didn't know it at the time. I walked throughout the neighborhood (a little over a mile) on this breezy, 65 F day. The jeans were mostly dry, but the knee bulge was there. It wasn't excessive, but it was there. Enough to make me realize that the thirty seconds I spent putting on and tying my shoes was a bad idea.

I read on another forum that the knee bulge happens with STF jeans if the denim is of a lower quality. I believe it. I have a pair of Levis premium denim (not sure if they're LVC/cone mills stuff, but they're in that range) that I dried on my body while sitting down. They don't have any knee bulges and they dried with the knees bent. I think the modern 501's have such low quality denim that they will bulge if wet and stretched even for a few seconds.

I just threw them back in the machine to be washed and hung dry.

My new method with 501's is to do a gentle machine wash then hang dry them. Then, I can always dip the waistband and hips area in water and let that area mold on my body.

Good post! I didnt know that could happen. As I prepare to get wet in my STF 501s for the first time, I will have to maybe lay outside in them instead of sitting down while they dry on me.

Hi, aheath, and welcome! I had a similar problem when I shrunk my first pair. I went to a movie while they dried. It made the knees sort of bigger/baggier than I would have liked.

On my next shrink, I stood up more and also tried to "mold" them down as they dried. This worked for me.

Hope this helps!

I just recenty bought my first pai of 501 STF. After shrinking and wearing them wet I was sitting and the knees stretched out quite dramatically. I was wondering if there was a way to get the to go back to normal. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I tend to find that the denim on both top and bottom works best for people in occupations that demand it (e.g. railroad worker, rancher, etc.). For casual dress, I prefer denim on either top or bottom but not both at the same time.

I wear denim jackets when I'm wearing casual trousers, twills, etc. on my legs. I recently acquired a slim fitted, rigid indigo trucker jacket from Levi's that goes with pretty much anything. Deep indigo is the perfect compliment to earth toned trousers. I haven't washed the jacket yet, as I'm hoping to have a similar fading effect that I also go for with jeans; I plan on waiting as long as possible before that initial wash.

I also have a suede jacket of unknown brand (got it off eBay and there were no tags - could be a one off from a skilled worker) that is an exact replica of the slim fitted Levi's trucker jackets. It has all the style of the denim trucker jacket, but the material being a tan suede allows me to wear it with jeans without going off into what I've heard others call the "Texas Tuxedo" look. It's perfect for casual wear and dressy enough to wear on a date (the suede gets compliments all the time). The suede gives it that elegant appeal and the style (slim trucker) is a familiar classic cut that is instantly recognizable without being cliche. I love it so much I feel guilty that the denim jacket isn't getting as much wear as it deserves.

Definate fan of denim jackets. Like 'der Schweizer', I love to double 'em up. Often wear an older sleeveless jacket over top of a rigid dark denim jacket or vice versa. When I'm feelin' extra raunchy I have an old Levi's Jean's jacket with lots of cool chrome studs / very nasty. I dress western (quasi) biker all the time though - so my tastes won't be universal. I'm an incurable strutter type, so the rowdier the better for me. One of the nice things about being in my 50's is that I can wear pretty much what I like. Peer pressure disappeared decades ago. Yippee!!! Enjoy hangin' with my biker buddies - we're not bad boys but we sure get the looks at bars and rest stops. Somehow or other, people are just really curious about leather and denim clad people. I read an article in 'Psychology Today' a few years back that alluded to the sensuality of denim and leather as a trigger for the libido. It's always triggered mine 'six guns'
Greetings to all the serious denim fans on the site!

i have two Levi's slim fit trucker jackets. I think they look great when wearing jeans especially with a checkered fitted western shirt. But still i am hesitant to wear them. Btw i recently bought a H&M denim shirt as well.

Well, I got myself some rigid Wrangler 13 MWZ's from Sheplers and I gotta say that I'm disappointed. While the denim is raw and slightly heavier than the STF's, it isn't nearly as stiff. Some have described the Wrangler blue as blueberry but after the initial soak in cold water the color is more like light navy blue, lighter and more blue than the STF's. The weave of the denim is herringbone and the outside does not have the attractive white/blue lines of the STF's - the white is scattered evenly throughout and looks cheap. The thread used for the stitching is very thin so it does not stand out like the STF's and is blue over the fly flap. The way that Wrangler attaches the seams is not as elegant as Levi's. I can tolerate the high pockets- makes for a change and I do like the brass rivets and iconic Wrangler patch on the rear pockets. These jeans for some reason do gravitate up towards my natural waist, ie, very high. These are indubitably THE original cowboy jeans which is cool but the way they are put together and the design details is too unrefined for my tastes. Verdict: 6.8/10 (STF's would score a 9.7/10).

The tale of the tape:

W33 L30
Actual measurements (pre cold water soak): W 34.8" Inseam: 30.7"
Shrinkage: W : 0.7" Length overall: 1.0"
**denim is sanforized

Suprisingly the rise (post soak) on my STF's (W33 L31) is greater ; front 30.8cm, seat 40.5cm
Wrangler's rise (post soak); front 30.0cm, seat 39.5cm.

Kane, yeah that's a good idea with getting the wranglers a bit bigger I hadn't thought of it myself. I keep telling myself i'm going to get a pair and never do...it's all speculation until I actually give them a go.

The rear pocket placement on the Wrangler 13MWZ rigid is too high for my tastes, the 936 Slim Fit rigid looks like it has a slightly lower rear pocket placement but i'm not sure about the slim fit part. The color of their indigo looks lighter than the STF's but this could be interesting. I do like the high waist though but you have to keep a trim figure for this cut to look it's best. I also love the Wrangler patch, with the iconic rope type lettering, on the rear pocket- Levi's has it's red tab and double arc stitching, Wrangler has that patch and W stitching - cool! The zip fly on the Wrangler's is also,IMO, more convenient but of course ya gotta love the buttons on the STF's! I'd be willing to try a pair of the 13MWZ's but i'd go a size up from my Levi's STF size to ensure the waist drops down a bit.

In the 80's, in vancouver, denim jackets were often worn by thug types (Lee Stormriders and Dayton boots were their uniform) so being the sheltered kid that i was i did not wear. In '92, i bought an LL Bean barn coat in stonewashed denim and wore that coat for years but being stonewashed, IMO, it didnt look good with the indigo jeans, that i was wearing at the time. In '96 i found a used(from '80's) GWG (Great Western Garment Co. fr. Canada) slim fitting jean jacket in indigo, that i wore a lot and that matched up well with indigo jeans. In '98 it was a Gap sherpa lined, indigo, denim jacket which was awesome and got it in an XS so it fit proper. It also went well with indigo jeans but for some reason i didn't wear that with indigo jeans that much(had green jeans at that time). I last wore that Gap jacket in 2004 at which point i moved to China and didnt bring with. I havent worn a denim jacket since but would love to get another. I like the Dickies Denim Blanket Lined Chore Coat a lot but it doesn't come in a small so it might be too big. The Wrangler denim jean jacket from Shepler's looks decent but it might also be too big. And of course love the Levi's Trucker jacket(slim and/or regular fit) but would have to try one on to see for sure. IMO, indigo denim jackets(IDJ) and indigo jeans go great together but IDJ's and stonewashed jeans together don't work and vice versa. And stonewash and stonewash- nah.

I bought a pair of preshrunk 501s in the light weight 11.5oz style yesterday. The color is "Dark Aged" and is has a real leather patch on the back. They are extremely soft and comfortable. Not sure how durable they will be but I have been enjoying them since I got em last night! <img src="http://forums.nedsferatu.com/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_wink.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" /> The code is 501-450. Has anyone else tried these lighter weight 501s? The back pockets are wider and higher. Very nice fit!

I always wear denim jackets except during the warm summer season, when I don't need more then a T-shirt. My favorite jackets are Lee and during winter time I'm wearing two denim jackets: First an unlined Lee jacket covered with a Lee Storm Rider blanket lined denim jacket. beside that I also like the Levis or Wrangler jackets. And like the pants I wear the unwashed till to the end first for the office, then outdoor and then heavy work.

i can use them about 1-2 years as nice jackets then another year for outdoor activities and then 1-5 years till they have completely rotten depending on how hard I have to use them in the forest and other heavy work. I can use the jackets mfor longer time then my pants

I realized that I made a mistake in my original post - the Wranglers do have 15.25oz denim. Sorry.

Thanks for the link, Ned. These Lees are the equivalent of the LVC line, Wrangler has something similar. What I meant was that Lee doesn't make "ordinary", affordable rigid jeans like STFs or rigid Wranglers.

I bought some rigid Lee bootcut jeans on ebay, the seem to be from the early 90ies (according to the labels). I had them made straight leg before washing. The waist is high as with 517s. The rivets are corroded and start to fall off, I had to replace them.

Hi Ned!

My last jeans were a pair of "black rinse" STF 501s. These are one of the latest styles of STF 501s, not solid black, just a deeper color than the ole 501 blues. They're "hard" jeans, just the way you like em. Also, they're popular with the dudes here in San Diego. A buddy had on a pair yesterday- crisp and a skintight fit. Just the way I like my jeans.

I keep my STF blackish 501s for formal wear. Never expect to wash the suckers. I even wear boxers under em to keep my 501s clean.

Went on a camping trip to the back country this summer. Left my STF 501s at home and lived in my 936 Cowboy Cut Wrangs for four days. I use Wrangs for hiking and other strenuous jobs. I know that 936s are tough jeans and won't rip in the crotch like STF 501s. STF 501s get raunchy quick. This might be a good thing for guys who love their jeans beat up.

As I'm overstocked with STF 501 blues, I use em mainly for grubby jobs, my next jeans will be 936 prewashed Wrangs.

I don't know anything about them but I thought of it when you mentioned lee. i've never actually seen their rigids in stores but apparently they do exist.

I'm def buying a pair of wrangs in the near future. I also want a pair of 501's that I keep dry and never shrink. The look is becoming popular in chicago i've been seeing it more and more.

Tim,

I am an old Levi's adorer. There's nothing better than a pair of 501s. Sometimes I pick on LS&Co as I don't agree with their way to handle things nowadays, but I still love them.

The 936s are like 70ies slims for me, I like the snug fit. Body-wise, a 13MWZ or 505 type cut fit's me best and I like jeans that have a slight taper. As long a the thigh isn't too loose.

I love the high back pockets on Wranglers. The broken twill doesn't look as good as traditional denim, but lasts indefinetly. Levi's do have a nicer shade of indigo and don't stitch the fly in blue thread. Wrangler's zipper is rugged and never fails.

So the point for me is....I have both brands. Lee has my thumb down as they don't sport rigids in their line.

Klaus,

I remember I tore up a pair of Wranglers just for the heck of it. I had no respect for em. Guys in California only wear Levis.

When I saw Jake Gyllenhaal into Wrangs in BBM, I had second thoughts. I ordered some pre-washed slim fit 936 Cowboy Cuts from Sheplers and have seen showing my bod off in em more and more.

I prefer the fit of these Wrangs to 501s. They are more snug and don't bulge out at the thighs. Also, they are tougher and don't bust out in the crotch. A better work jean for sweat hog jobs.

I still wear STF 501s. I like them when they have that skintight fit. And the bells and whistles, like the buttonfly, are better than Wrangs. My next pair jeans will be Wrangs. Haven't tried other Levis like 527s and 514s.

I checked out the Sheplers website today. Now most guys here aren't into prewashed jeans, but this information is interesting:

13MWZ and 936DEN in colors stonewash and bleach are made of 15.75oz denim!! The prewash process may affect durability to some extent, but I believe these are almost as hard wearing as the rigids. Wrangler's broken twill denim is nearly indestructable, anyway.

Wrangler does a great job with their Cowboy Cut line. No wonder Levi's has lost ground in the Western segment, as Wranglers are superiour in almost every aspect.
